I’ll Eat Your Face (ROI) | ‘Clit 2: The Clittening’ DVD
The capacity for shite-talk out of Corkmen has a reputation all of it’s own, and it’s highly unlikely that this latest visual extravaganza from Cork’s finest spastic duo of metallic delight, I’ll Eat Your Face, will change any of that.
There’s a simple question sitting in the corner here; why bother putting together a DVD at this early stage in the band’s career? But this is a question that’s grounded in rational questions like band development and professional consideration, the problem here being that I’ll Eat Your Face are anything but a rational band, and more a primal force of nature. Coupled with the immortal reason that they decided to make a DVD so that ‘you could lash it on while drinking cans with your mates and not have to tell them to shut up when a deadly double bass bit comes along’, it’s clear they’ve absolved themselves from any doubt in this reviewer’s mind.
‘Clit 2’ basically is a documentary, roughly fifteen minutes long, that chronicles the two bold members of the band (drummer Barrytron and guitarist The Boy) playing a vast variety of gigs, getting locked, talking shite with mates, rolling around in bits, talking some more shite, doing a bit of recording, and then getting pissed and playing some more gigs. On first hand experience, this makes for extremely entertaining viewing while drinking cans with mates. What’s moreso, the most beguiling thing about I’ll Eat Your Face is that they actually have the riffs to back themselves up with, coming across like a slightly retarded version of Pig Destroyer with some flat-out savage drumming and riffing serving as the basis of their best bits.
There’s little doubt that the band are an immense amount of craic live, despite the fact that their sound consists of a multitude of speedy riffs and overtly silly samples. It’s also easy to get the impression that there’s enough talent in there for them to put together a ‘serious’ effort, but on the merits of this, that would be so much less entertaining. Dumb, young and full of Dutch Gold, this is worth a few moments of anyone’s time. It’s also not getting a rating as it falls well outside the remit of the entire demo/album paradigm. Another face well and truly ate to bits - roll on the debut album.
