Ronnie James Dio | 1942 - 2010

It was the message no-one wanted to read.

Message from Wendy Dio
Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.

- Wendy Dio

It’s a sad loss, and it’s hard to know what to say. I guess now he’s on the other side of this mortal coil, we can just wish him our best - and no doubt encourage him to “TURN UP THE NIGHT”.

What an incredible life.

I’m sure we all have our DIO recollections. ‘Mob Rules’ would always be my own choice cut, with all the added vigour and passion he brought to Black Sabbath.

But everything he did had more than merit - it’s got stardust all over it.

RIP to a real performer, a real rocker and an artist bursting with passion right til the end.

  16. What terrible news.
I was talking to my brother about Ronnie yesterday, saying it was a shame H&H had to pull out of the ‘Maiden gig in Dublin in July, I didnt know it but at that stage he had passed.

First heard of DIO in 1990 after hearing Dream Evil and seeing the video to The Last in Line. Finally got around to getting an album a few years later, been a fan ever since.

Saw the great man live in concert 3 times, twice solo (2002, 2005) and once with H&H (2007). Was looking forward to seeing him last year and again this year but it wasnt to be.

The music he made will live on in the various bands he was associated with.

I dont think I’m too far off the mark when I say that there may never be a metal vocalist as unique as Ronnie. He kept a powerful voice well into his 60’s, kept producing new material and refused to live on past glories, kept a positive and approachable attitude to fans. He really seemed to believe in the power of music and how it unified people all around the world.

    Long live rock and roll…..

  23. Scarlet Bayne Says:

I’m truly upset. He was without any doubt one of the best and consistently amazing artists the Metal world ever seen. Halford and Dickinson don’t come close these days. RIP Ronnie.

  24. Doomschmoker Says:

very sad day indeed, such a true legend, he will be remembered forever!!! RIP RJD, a total metal god!

Brett Michaels survives a brain haemorage yet stomach cancer takes RJD away, there’s no justice!

He’ll know for the first time, if he’s evil or divine……

  25. Tiberius Nyarlethotep Says:

There will never be anybody like him again.
    I remember a review referring to “…that lion’s mane of a voice…”
Seemed the most perfect way to describe the power, tone and flat out DIGNITY with which he sang.
Deeply saddened.Rainbow Rising and The Last in Line on repeat.
    RIP RJD.

  26. Seen Dio in the Ambassador a few years back. What a voice.
