James Loveday runs The Distortion Project. For 16 years this small promotion business has brought an incredible list of bands here.

But things haven’t been working out lately. And in January, James took to Go Fund Me to ask for help. Big help. Fifteen thousand pounds of help.

    Great podcast guys, very sensitively dealt with.

    One thing that struck me though when James listed out some of the shows that made a loss -Is it a case of the market simply not being there for this type of thing in Belfast? Whilst not Slayer’s or Metallica’s the likes of Paradise Lost, Ministry etc. are no slouches. I.e. Will it be a case of the DP being in for more of the same in future years?

    Very interesting interview. Shocked to hear that certain shows mentioned in the podcast ran at a loss in Belfast – tough stuff.

  6. If 10% of the fans that go to the bigger shows, Slayer, Anthrax, W.A.S.P Machine Head went to the smaller independent shows, we wouldn’t have this problem. I’d love to know what the barrier is.

    I’m thankful we have James and H so we get to see the likes of Beastmilk, Overkill, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Kreator, Prong etc

    I was surprised to hear that with all the candid talk about the DP finances in this podcast, there was no mention of the fact that a lot of these bigger shows that lost money basically had to be taken on in order to get other gigs that might do well. Most of this comes down to how European tour-booking agencies operate; they make sure to make their profit, and the result is that smaller independent promoters, particularly in smaller countries, get landed with big fees for gigs that are never going to break even for them.
    The squeeze comes from the established industry – don’t do some gigs like Paradise Lost, etc., and you won’t end up with some tours like Deathcrusher, that kind of thing. Pretty much, if you want to get the good gigs that might actually make a bit of money on ticket sales, you often have to accept some other gigs that were always going to operate at a loss; otherwise, the tour booker will stop working with you, and just get someone else to do it somewhere.
    What’s happening is not a simple process, and this podcast is in danger of making it sound a bit more straightforward than it is. There’s a fairly complex web involved that incorporates both local competition and European competition, usually mediated by larger European/Worldwide booking companies who have no qualms in exploiting that competition for their own game. So what it essentially comes down to is larger elements of the music industry profiting off smaller companies or even, as in this case, individuals. In the music industry, the small operators always tend to be the losers.

    Daftest thing i have ever heard, James responded well “no one is obliged to come to shows, i don’t believe in the notion of ‘scene’ ”

    nail on the head , if i can’t make it to see a deadly band on a monday night i can’t fuckin make it. cut that shite out with resentment
