On a mad buzz for this style lately- Geasa, Grok, Vemod sorta gear- that raw harsh vibe mixed with a sense of cold dark space and wide open snowy tundra. I'm sure there are folks here who listen to a lot of this sort of stuff whereas I only dabble, so any recommendations for other bands along these lines worth checking out would be welcome.

My immediate associations with 'astral BM' would veer more towards Mare Cognitum, Midnight Odyssey, Astral Path and Dark Space, all of whom I've been listening to a lot over the last 12 months, but they don't quite match the bands you listed...and so aren't any great use to you as tips. Sorry.

I would associate astral bm with kataxu. Check em out, hunger of elements is a great album. If you like that black metal with alot of atmos and 'space' in it, check out grift.

for raw and "astral" bm, I'd go for Paysage d'Hiver / Darkspace, but that's probably not what you are looking for. I'm not the biggest fan of Vemod, but their album sounds very familiar to something I heard before. What I would suggest is probably to start with these 2 pages, and see if anything fits the bill:

http://www.metal-archives.com/artists/Sir_N./6248

particularly, Bekëth Nexëhmü:

also check out Draug from 2016, it's decent EP:

+ maybe Walknut:

Cheers dudes. Snowy outer space is exactly what I'm after!

I'm familiar with a few of those bands and in some cases just the names so I'll dive in.

Dave, those Aussie bands are defo among the ones I'm curious about. Been meaning to delve a bit further into that lot as I like what I've heard from Midnight Odyssey (despite the band's name sounding like a Maeve Binchy novel)!

My only contribution besides Darkspace and PdH is Aureole "Alunar", one of your own suggestions.

Another band I've come across lately is Brouillard, which is French for Mgla, but sounds nothing like them! Very dense and maybe a bit more earthly than astral but enjoyable nonetheless.

One act I love is Nychts, band from switzerland who released https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_tOtZ3W8Ag a few years ago, maybe a bit too synthy tho, and vocals take a bit of getting used to.? Also Mesathrim http://mesarthim.bandcamp.com/, last one esp is v good

Beketh Nexemuh and Kataxu are hitting the spot nicely.

Draug sound decent. Not exactly the stuff I'm looking for but still interesting.

I think it was Foudre Noire I was trying to recall:

it's more a bit more 'perkele' than 'norsk' but might hit the spot.
