Could this actually happen? It's all over the Internet
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sp ... fight.html

If it's real it will be absolutely huge!

No way. Firstly, McGregor is contracted to UFC and cant take outside fights. If he does he'll never fight in the UFC again. Secondly, and more on the funny side, do you think he'd accept just 7 million to fight him when Mayweather would supposedly get 100 million? Doubt it :P

This story originated from The Sun so, there ya go.

Helwani is probably the most reliable journalist in mma.

This came up months ago after some comment from one of them about the other.

McGregor makes peanuts compared to Mayweather. The payscale is so out of proportion that it'd make little sense for Mayweather to agree to.

As well as that, I think if it did happen McGregor would win hands down. Mayweather is a great boxer, which means he's great at blocking, staying away from punches. What happens when all of a sudden some lad whose professionally trained to throw kicks at you starts throwing kicks at you.

It would be strictly boxing the article says. I know a couple of people working at the Sun in the UK, I've been talking to them today and when I bring this story up I'm being completely blanked. They do this when they know something but can't say anything. There must be something to this

Anyway, a rumour way more likely to be true is that he's rematching Diaz at UFC 202 in August.

How do contracts work with UFC? Is McGregor contracted for x amounts of fights at a time and each fight a fee is negotiated?

No its a time frame so for example 24 months etc.. BUT.. UFC contracts are insanely well put together .. well for the UFC rather than the fighters.
They can freeze a contract at anytime so say you have 6 months left on your contract and get an injury that you could work through but just go 'fuck it, ill sit out the next 6 months till my contracts ends' ..NOPE. They can freeze the contract and then you have to finish out the remaining 6 months when you come back. And you cannot fight during that time with anyone else etc.
In theory they could keep McGregors contract frozen indefinitely so he can't fight anywhere.

Anyway.. all this shite is just becoming a joke now.

I think they are both just doing this to get some publicity. And it is working.

The whole freezing contracts thing has an upside to it, it means you can't get fired/released as easily when injured which would leave you in serious financial problems. WCW used to do it in the mid 90s (which was pro wrestling yes but there are a lot of similarities).
