I have never been blown away by a musical performance (drums, guitar, songwriting even) by a female musician. It's not helped that males seem to feel the need to blow things out of all proportion with undeserved compliements on musicianship, just cos of being female.
(i used to play bass in a not quite proper metal band, and often had many compliments on my playing despite the fact that I was just competant but trying to stretch my ability with fills and things)
Vocals on the other hand - Agnete M Kirkevaag just..mmmm. vocally.
( I specify modern music, as i have witnessed some classical / traditional musicians who were female and mind blowing)

Can you give reasons that you think Emperor are more power metal than black metal?
And with Iced Earth, I think the songs are either boring or a collection of REALLY good riffs that aren't put together overly well. That and the material Schaffer put out with Demons and Wizards was just SO much better.
As well as that, I don't particularly like Barlow's vocals but Ripper Owens has always just REALLY irritated me!
Perhaps not enough reason to write them off as shite but BY GOD, they annoy me. |

Godflesh's best album is Songs of Love and Hate. Yes, better than Streetcleaner.
NOTHINGT WRONG THERE!!! Songs of love uand hate is a blinder - and yeah quite a few of their albums are better than streetcleaner which in itself is an all time classic!! classic band!

'Slaughter Of The Soul' is a bag of shite. The nadir of At The Gates' output. The fact that it gave birth to two godawful 'new' genres (Gothenburg Metal and Metalcore) just goes to show that the average Metal fan doesn't know his arse from his elbow. |

The majority of active Pantera haters only hate them because it makes them, and therefore all their metal opinions, appear to have more credibility. Great Southern Trendkill is their best in my opinion. Here's another controversial opinion; Pantera did not rip off Exhorder, there's only a few months in the difference of both their emergences and not a single member of Exhorder was talented or smart enough to gain them any sort of commercial success, instead resorting to puerile humour and outdated shock tactics which, thankfully, in no way compensated for them not being able to string together enough decent songs to develop an audience. The only vague similarity is in vocal style at points. Trouble sound far more like Black Sabbath than Pantera sound like Exhorder and I don't hear anyone crying about that.
Dream Theater suck big fat donkey balls, can't write a song to save their lives, there's so many tangents in the music that you lose all sense of theme or congruity, James La Brie constantly sounds like there's a weasel living in his throat squeezing every strained note out of his vocal chords, he has destroyed every attempt they ever made at writing decent songs. he fact that the other members of Dream Theater don't notice this proves more than any other point that they will never be able to compare themselves to any of the greats they claim to be influenced by. Secretly I think John Myung was a mail order bride of Mike Portnoy's who they forced to learn bass and dress up as a man, he would leave the band if he could but then he would have to return to his previous life in a brothel in Singapore. |

I'd agree that they took a massive leap foward on Anthems to a symphonic sound, something that that a lot of later power metal bands also did. But the atmosphere of something like Ye Entrancemperium and some shite that Blind Guardian come out with are so far apart it's criminally deaf of you to call them power metal.
On that note, a lot of what is called Power Metal is almost totally useless tripe that I wouldn't touch with a twelve foot stick. |
