Sugar Water Presents:

NADJA (Canda, Alien 8 Recordings)

w/ AIDAN BAKER (Solo Set)

Thursday, March 26th

8pm | 10 Euro | All Ages

Dublin Venue TBA

Sugar Water are proud to present this exciting double bill featuring NADJA, Canada's finest purveyors of "post-metal shoegaze blisscore," as well as a special solo set from one of the most prolific and inventive ambient musicians in the world right now, AIDAN BAKER.

NADJA

NADJA is a duo of AIDAN BAKER + LEAH BUCKAREFF from Toronto, Canada making music that encompasses experimental/drone, ambient, shoegazer, + doom metal. Originally formed by Baker in 2003 as a solo endeavour, Buckareff joined in 2005 to bring NADJA out of the studio + into a live setting. They have since released numerous albums with several different labels + have toured extensively in North America + Europe.

"Textures push left and right against the edges of the stereo spectrum. Disembodied vocals bubble up in agonized rapture. This is the aftershock of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless-- and it hits much harder." - Pitchfork.

"Nadja play deep droning Ambient Metal where vague, indistinct sounds evolve or mutate into something altogether more solid, if not monolithic...It is crude but also oddly dreamlike." - The Wire.

"This is epic ultradoom metal, but with the metal replaced by soft billowy clouds of fuzzy distortion, the howling fury twisted into dreamlike tranquility, the blasting beats pulled apart and sprinkled here and there like percussive raindrops. This is as soft and pretty as a dirge-y drone can get while still retaining its inherent doomic mass. Utter and absolute loveliness drenched in a thick patina of crushing heaviness. Impossible but perfect." - Aquarius Records.

AIDAN BAKER

AIDAN BAKER is a Canadian musician + writer currently based in Toronto. He performs as a solo artist + with the groups NADJA + ARC. A classically trained multi-instrumentalist, his primary instrument is the electric guitar w/ which he creates music ranging from experimental/drone to ambient post-rock to contemporary classical. He has released numerous albums on labels from around the world + has authored several books of prose/poetry.

- Press -

"Baker experiments with guitar textures, tape loops and drum machines to create a thoroughly warming and textured listening experience. There are echoes of the avant-shoegazers Windy and Carl or Labradford, or even Talk Talk / Bark Psychosis in places, resonances of post rock and hints at the dreamy ambience of Brian Eno or Stars of the Lid, but Baker’s sound feels more live and more spontaneous than any of the above." - Boomkat.

"Aidan Baker is presenting us with ambient instrumental music that isn't just a map of some exotic fictional Roger Dean-type planetscape, but a view of the darkest parts of the human interior itself." - Dusted.

Deadly, deadly deadly! I'm relishing the opportunity to finally see Nadja (and hopefully they'll be in a more suitable venue this time).

A bit flowery alright but relatively accurate. Sounds fruity with the "core" bit; they could have dropped that. Ambient drone is more apt. Anyhow, all that matters is that they are immensely good.
