<  MI Users Confront The Wider World  ~  ok realistically (running question)

I know some people here are all mad into their fitness and excersise and all that jazz.To be able to run 10K in June, how long ago should I have started training and whatnot,or is there any way of redeeming myself now if I get my arse into gear? Any kind of advice/help will be appriciated!!

but think how much quicker we'll be able to bring you beer and dinners and also pull the washing in from the clothes line if we had that ability!! Very Happy

True. But if women had the mental stability to run a marathon without crying after a mile, surely youse could be using this new ability to run to the off licence for men, the alpha species. Its a ridiculous notion.

10 k is totally doable I reckon, even if you're totally unfit. Just ease yourself in, you've loads of time babe. It's a part of a marathon or something is it?

Most important thing is to take it easy when you are starting to run.
Try a short run twice a day at a nice steady pace, and slowly build up your distance every week, also don't forget to stretch before and after running.

thankys!!! so I've really no excuse,it is do-able and just have a bit on sense about it?

and yup,for the mini marathon.Have agreed to do it for the DSPCA with my sister.who's just lost a stone.and is super fit.and I'm getting more and more scared the more I think about it. Sad Memer,join us? the health kick so far has just involved not drinking,having less coffee more hippy tea in work,and trying to smoke less.But in reality means smoking as much and having jaffa cakes in place of drinkies...

If your goal is to finish then you should be able to do it, some expert recon you need 10 weeks training to be able to run a 10k from start to finish.

Take it weekly. First week three times 2km.
Second week three times 3km.
Do this all the way up to week 10 three times 10 km.

Now if you were running a marathon you would not do the max distance until the run but as it's only 10 km you should be fine.

Warm up and warm down. Do this for at least ten mins. Plenty of stretching exercises online. This is crucial, the risk of injury is way higher if you don't warm up properly, and afterwards if you don't warm down you could pull something easily. Now move yer arse Laughing

I find jogging incredibly boring. So much so that after a certain distance it's my mind telling me to pack it in much more so than my body. But I find that when running with others I'm distracted from the act of running, and so can cover much greater distances before it becomes an effort. So, you might also try contrasting running alone and running with others. Works different ways for different people.

In terms of distance, 10 km ain't so far. You shouldn't have too much difficulty working yourself up to that in time.

kewla,thanks everyone!! I swear I'll start tonight!(and try and cut back on the eating junk until it's done).

and yup that plan is to go with the sibling.My logic was if it was just myself,there was no way I'd stick at it.so with other people the guilt will work methinks Smile

I walked the Cork city marathon last year and I trained specifically to walk it as I knew I would be nowhere near fit or light enough to run it.
I gave myself six monthes to train up for it, slacked for the first three. Than really got serious for the last three.

I did the feckin thing in the end! All 26 point whatever miles, but even though I only walked it. My feet and legs were fucked for a week afterwards. Especially round the mid-section Laughing
I had'nt trained enough.

I was going to run half of it this year, but I dont think I'll be ready and I dont want to wreck myself again as it took me ages to get back into training after last year.

Been keeping up on my training now but all the fats just becoming muscle so i'm still close to the same weight. Just a better type of weight. So running for long distances is still hard work. Different muscles doing different jobs and all that......

As my uncle always says, "Colins always going to be a big lad". Laughing

I did raise e280 for unicef doing the marathon though. That and the sense of accomplishment were well worth the pain.

But I would'nt do something like it again unless I was absolutely certain I was ready. I could lift weights all day for ya though! Laughing

lol thanks!!least this is only a mini marathon and I'm freaking out!!fair fecks to you for doing the whole thing though,wouldn't do it myself for love nor money! and I've had similar comments from my family about size/fitness et al. last time I tried something like this involved my Da getting way to into "fixing" me as he put it and ended with the Ma yelling "SHE'S ONLY A CHILD AND SHE'S CRYING!!THIS HAS TO END!!" out a window.so if I can manage this without dying and getting a bit of money together then I'll be impressed Very Happy
