Own up - most of you have owned one of these venerable pedals at one point. I was moved to get mine out of mothballs after seeing a fella get a nice enough sound using a Les Paul Studio, a Boss Heavy Metal pedal and a 70s Marshall of some variety.
Someone must be getting a usable sound - what settings and gear are you using? Anyone using something similar to myself (SG Standard + Laney LC15)? Anyone tried modding one? |

the heavy metal and metal zone are very different sounding from my experience.
metal zone is disgraceful though. havent used one in maybe 5 years. |

indeed, the MetalZone and HeavyMetal are not the same pedal.
I got my Metal Zone as a birthday gift years ago. the distortion off it is absolute garbage but it makes a fine booster in front of a hard-driven tube amp.
settings:
Level: 3 o clock
Bass: 2 o clock
Treble: 2 0 clock
Mids: neutral (12 o clock)
Drive: 8 o clock (zero/no drive) |

You can get a usable tone out of them but it's not easy, you really need to keep a cap on the fizzy high end. I tended to boost the mids a fair bit and restrain the lows and highs. They're fairly scooped already and If you put the distortion up too much on them sounds shit too, but if you keep the gain crunchy, just at the point before it starts to thicken up into soupy distortion, you can get somethig that isn't shite.
It's a lot easier to get a shit tone than a good one, that much is true, but they're not entirely useless. |

Not generally a fan of metal zones myself or any pedal that has the word metal in its name.
Having said that, I've just received a 1983 Boss HM-2 from Japan. Just got it for messing around with and replicating early Swedish death metal dirt. DIRT! |

| I trawled this one out of the cupboard by accident recently and I haven't looked back. If you are over that phase of your life where you drop all mids and beef the trebs, bass and gain then you could probably make use of one of these bad boys. I use it with plenty of volume, no gain, pleny of mid, plenty of bass and not so much treble on the pedal and just have a very mild overdrive on the amp. I then fire the Metal Zone into an EH Big Muff for some super fat fuzz tones that sustain for ages!! |

| What is the alternative for a death metal/black metal sound? I really would like to know. I've used one for quite a while. Not found anything else that offers that level of distortion. Every other pedal I've used just does not seem to go far enough. Then again, I don't have a decent tube amp, so I've probably just not been exposed to what a proper sound is. |

A decent amp!
in general you'll get the best sound by using a high gain tube amp with a boost in front of it. the metal zone and HM-2 pedals actually make for really good death/black boosts. |

i use a metalzone in fornt of my laney mxd120 (which im selling if anyone's interested) with an Epi Les Paul Standard Plus, and the sound out of it is fucking mighty. load of drive on the amp, wee bit of drive on the pedal, whack the level way up along with the bass and mid, turn down the treble.
