An album that changed it for me - remember as a kid reading about in Kerrang then a local metalhead lent me it along with other stuff. Still one that gets plenty of abuse.

tis a great album but I cant decide which I prefer..
The first Venom I heard was From Hell to the unknown in '85 and it blew me away and I had to build an altar for it straight away! It was totally different to most of the stuff up till then...

Death is swift with Satans sword
All the same,young and old
Life means nothing to my Lord
Drink from chalice ,warm and sweet
Virgins heart,the final beat
Lightning strikes the virgin dies
Satans smiles

S.A.C.R.I.F.I.C.E.

Moon is black,the witches dance
Heaven is denied

What a fuckin song. What a riff. Twisted Evil

When I first heard this album at the age of 15 I thought Teacher's Pet was childish and immature. Now I find it strangely moving and profound.

To my shame I've only lately got around to getting Welcome to Hell, with Black Metal on order. I've honestly never played an album so much since getting it. The relentless energy and enthusiasm is unbelievable. So, what, besides the first 3 would be considered essential and what should be avoided?

I'm the same. i only recently got my arse around to picking up some Venom. Black Metal is fucking great. i also picked up Possessed but it wasn't as good. The production on the pic LP anyway is awful especially compared to the bassy overdriven madness of BM!

Possessed is essential but perhaps not as immediately in your face as the first three. Yeah the production is dodgy but you gotta see past the initial WTF? and get to know the songs. Once your ears tune in you find it worthwhile. Title track is pure evil, satanachist -what a riff,Too Loud for the crowd - an anthem of mayhem and made for playing live,Mystique- class with some evil undertones, i could go on ...Get it.

I picked up the MMV boxset for 15 last xmas - a good sample of later stuff and some decent live versions and alt. mixes. It's sequenced in such a way as to be a worthwhile listen even if you've got the main albums. You can get it cheap on play.com, hmv.com and the likes.

I also was looking for Possessed for ages but have only given it a couple of spins since getting it. Though they've done decent stuff here and there, for me it's really down to the first 3, not forgetting the essential singles. I'm not pushed about tracking down any of the later albums.

The Sanctuary reissues of the early albums are cheap and definitive. I'd also recommend the version of Black Metal including the live dvd, worth getting even for those who have the album already. The live album Eine Kleine Nachtmusik is worthwhile too.
