TheCompost wrote: Astronomy is obviously completely fascinating and mind boggling. But one of the things I love about it is when you compare the mundane, banal crap that makes up part of our human existence with the total craziness of the universe and all the shit that goes with it. For example last week I forgot to drop back some DVDs and was charged a late fee. As I begrudgingly paid the charge I failed to acknowledge that the Milky Way is moving at a speed of about 1000 kilometres per second towards a region of space 150 million light years away called the Great Attractor.
The light bulb in my jacks went causing me to become quite vexed. Such was my vexation that I completely forgot the fact that the Pistol Star is the most luminous star known - 10 million times the power of the Sun and as big as the size of Earth's entire orbit around the Sun.
I called directory inquires for a number and they forgot to forward me the text. While calling them again in a state of agitation I failed to release that
a neutron star has such density that a teaspoonful of its matter would weigh more than all the people on Earth.
I once very much regretted starting a ridiculous thread on a website called metalireland.com I was so consumed with regret that the notion that the most distant galaxy ever observed is estimated to be around 13,000,000,000 light-years away never crossed my mind.
I banged my toe on the end of the bed and wanted to stab a small woodland creature in the face such was the pain I was in. Indeed the pain was so great for those few seconds that I forgot I was a human being on a weird as fuck planet over 4 billion years old. And someday I’m gonna croak and become s stinky rotting pile of goo.
good work Ray, t'was a great read buddy, Demitri Flugleman would be proud of ye! |

Great thread. I think about this shit all the time. And I mean ALL the time. My head is so stuck in the cosmos that I neglect many everyday, Earth-bound thoughts.
Its hard not to see the futility in everything man related when you consider the absolute massiveness and awesomeness (in the proper meaning of the word, not in internetkiddyspeak) of the universe.
Then there's quantum theory. I wish more people would think about just how we are gonna manage to bend space to get our arses off this planet, seeing as we will never have enough fuel of any kind to travel to even Alpha Centauri without doing so.
I am thankful for music and shrooms, both of which are key tools for cosmic travelling, at least as close as is possible until we crack space bending or speed of light travel. |

I love the way that people who take hallucinogenic drugs go on "cosmic journeys."
No you didn't mate. You had a hallucinogenic trip, exactly what the drug meant to do.
Anyway, ever read Michio Kaku's "Hyperspace"? It's a fantastic exposé of higher dimensions, utterly fascinating. If you're into cosmic journeys and all, it's the book for you. |

Sounds like it could be an interesting read, cheers.
And as far as cosmic journeys go, I am aware of the fact that its a trip and that I'm not actually in space! I don't know if you have ever experienced an all-out brain melter of a cosmic trip or not, but after experiencing it people tend to discover some answers... and a hell of a lot more new questions, about the universe |

Ach aye I have, and I know what you're on about. I once composed the perfect song that would have made me famous on a trip, and promptly forgot it the next morning, despite the assurance I couldn't forget something so class.
I have mates that believe they're genuinely tapping into an outer conciousness while of acid etc, that kinda thing I find hilarious. |

I know what you're on about too, haha, My mate and I convinced ourselves we had discovered the meaning of life while fuckered and swore we wouldn't forget it... which we did xD
I've lost many a good riff or lyric the same way too. The key is to set a recording going before you're too fucked. We're planning an all night acid jam in studio soon, can't wait
I'd actually agree with your mates. Not with acid so much, but with natural substances like shrooms, salvia, peyote etc. I'm of the opinion that they unlock certain filters that are normally blocked off because they serve no everyday purpose. I won't elaborate on my own experiences which have lead me to think this because I don't wanna hijack this thread.
Maybe I'll drag up the drugs thread that was floating around a while back... |

YEah that's pretty cool...was watching it a few nights ago after reading this thread kinda went on a youtube binge!
It doesnt factor the 11 multiverses though does it. Also isnt there speculation that dark matter may be in a sense the other multiverses seeping into this one? |

I think you're confusing that with Gravity. It's a such a weak force in our Universe that scientists think it's "leaking" in from another Universe. So, we're only getting a "taste" of it so to speak and it would explain why it's such a weak force in comparison to the other forces. |
