Wild load of drama today over Bloodstock making a ridiculous offer for Primordial to play, and expecting them to do it for nothing. Not even travel expenses. Fucking shocking.

They did that with Danish band Raunchy a few years ago. They booked them but raunchy pulled the plug as they werent gonna be getting paid or anything.

Its a poor show from BS to be honest £100 for a ticket yet they can't cover bands costs.

They paid them last time they played the indoor event which was a smaller affair so I can't see what the problem was this time around.Primordial is a bigger band since then to!

Its the same story with all fests they expect bands to play for nothing & be happy with the PR.But if people aren't buying CDs & the promoters aren't paying the bands somethings got to give. The whole 20-30% cut from merch sales on top of that is another kick in the balls.

Yeah there are a few things I do regret about that whole 'drama' as you called it but I don't regret speaking out about it, it's a fucking disgusting, shameful and downright disrespectful situation

and what I really fail to understand is that there are people on that forum who somehow think the band are at fault for lifting the lid and speaking out about the way things are going at festivals
being unprofessional is sitting there and taking it when someone is out of order, the whole point of what I did there was to try and make people aware of what's going on, because I'm sure most people download now and assume....hey we'll pay in to see them live so we are still giving the band something...

it's as simple as this
- the huge bands are charging more and more, and of course selling less and less, making hay while the sun shines as it were
- flights have gone up often about 200% since 2005/6 and festivals don't want to offer this increase within their fees
- therefore every band under that top 10% is being offered less and less money to play, almost that it's vital promo so you should be happy
- they also take 30% of your merch
- bands sales are tanking, so how does anyone make any money to pay for anything?
- bands made festivals not the other way around, people are too quick to forget that
- there is a going rate for a band as we are/what we sell/ etc and while that is of course negotiable there's a standard rate....roughly speaking

so to be offered nothing, and no we didn't go to them and ask could we play, doesn't work like that....you get offers through your booking agent, and not even travel expenses?....

we aren't the biggest band but definitely larger than middling, sell very well in the Uk, how can you justify doing that after twenty years 7 albums and guys have kids/mortgages/real life stuff to deal with?
so of course I saw read and what happened is what happened....

oh well o)

Shocked They take 30% of YOUR merch??? That's total fucking horse-shit; what's your bands merch got to do with them? I understand maybe a fee is required like any market/vendor scenario but 30% is extracting the Michael somewhat!
Sure isn't that about the only way that bands are able to afford to keep going most of the time is through merch sales!

Pretty disgusting situation alright. Is it all the major fests that are going like this or is it just a BOA thing?

I read through that bullshit on the BOA forum last week. I agree with Al on pretty much everything, especially that bands originally made festivals and not the other way around.

Haha, fuck me.

I seem to remember a vid interview with primordial from a while back where the topic of %s from merch was talked upon at some length. Absolutely horrible practice, and one which I'm sure the majority of fans are unaware of. When you buy a t-shirt, cd, patch or w/e from a band's merch stall, you tend to do it thinking you're giving them the money near-enough directly, bypassing the label etc; not that you're giving someone else a sizeable cut.

As brazen as offering a band a slot with no expenses is, the additional charge on merch is just ludicrous.

I'll put it this way.......

when you buy a bands shirt from those stalls in the middle of a festival field consider this

- the band pays to print them
- you pay v.a.t on them inside Germany (if printed there)
- if in the Uk then of course sterling kills you
- you pay shipping to the festival
- the fest then takes 20-30% of your merch usually for selling it for you
- you have to price fix with the big bands usually, if they sell for 30Euro so do you, no choice

this can leave you selling very little because you've priced yourself out of the market and the fans think you've 'sold out' by charging so much

or you make so little per shirt it's hardly worth it, and also bearing in mind profits in the band are split by 3/4 or 5

in fact every veune virtually on our US tour was asking for 20-30% for nothing and considering how weak the $ was against the euro we were practically giving them away, we always have one cheap $12 black and white 'punk' shirt...we might as well have been handing them out for free

now

ever wondered why Bolt Thrower have never played certain festivals and never will? because they refuse to cow-tow to this regime. which is great but unfortunately not every band is Bolt Thrower
they have a fixed tour ticket price and if a promoter charges over I've heard stories of them making promoters stand at the entrance handing back 2euro to people....
print their own merch and if any festival books them they have their own merch stand or they don't play

admirable to a fault but not something the rest of us can really do

It's just galling to think that, at such a festival, after spending (what is it? £100+ for bloodstock these days?) money on a ticket and travelling expenses, the bands - aka your reason for being there - may be just as out of pocket as you, and they're expected to enthusiastically entertain.

I guess at a certain point your band becomes too big to be anything but a headliner at the smaller festivals, but not enough of a "name" to be a major pull at larger ones. Which apparently means you're supposed to unapologetically get reamed.

Holy fucking shit. That is madness. I never realised bands were so viciously fucked over.
