Disgorging Legion wrote: Wow, 1 month is €619 (for over 25s). Steep. You'd want to make use of it if you're paying that much. If you arent getting many trains you should compare combined single ticket prices to the pass total.
That 619 is still a 2nd class pass. You will have to pay the difference when you get a train that doesn't have 2nd class seats, is a night train or one that requires booking. On top of the 400 it cost an extra 100-120 for special trains over the month.
This info for all train types is all in the TC euro timetable aswell I mentioned above^ |

Did it last year, amazing experience.
Try as much as possible to do night trains saves so much time, HINT: Buy your seat in advance when you arrive at the station to guarantee a place.
Id recommend Lake Bled in Slovenia to anyone doing an interrail trip, originally planned on staying for 2 days and ended up staying a week i loved it so much. Canyoning, rafting, hiking, biking, paragliding, the whole country was like a giant playground.
Krakow id deadly too, Auschwitz and the salt mines are great must sees.
If you can hit Budapest, one of my highlights last year, go on one of the caving tours, an old network of caves and tunnels in the Buda mountains you have to navigate through, hostels can organise this for you.
Also cannot reccommend Florence enought if you can out it on your route, spend at least 2 full days there and soak it in. |

did interrailing last year with a mate. places were as listed and its my opinions on the places
paris (shit hole and expensive)
amsterdam(dont remember much but it was amazing)
berlin (only stayed 1 days but was really good)
krakow(been there twice now and its amazing)
austria (great bar called "the travellers inn", fucked for 2 days and didnt do any thing)
Prague (went there 4 years ago and again while interrailing, first time was better and cheaper, prices seem to have went up)(oh and theres a good hostel near the centre that has free beer between 7 and 8pm)
budapest (lovly place but dodgy at night, was beat up and mugged and taxi drivers are iggnorant twats)
munich (one of the best places ive ever been too)
rome(nice place but way too expensive and too much street sellers that wont fuck off)
brussels (nice place but didnt do much in it to have an opinion, great irish bar there 2euro a beer all day)
the whole interrailing experiance over all was amazing and id do it again, you learn what to do and not to do the first time.
things i learnt
your inter railing pass for a month does not cover all trains, only long journeys and you have to pay extra for sleeper trains, think it was 20euro for a bed and 5euro for a seat
night trains require reservation. dont wait around the train station at night expecting to get on. you wont.
berlin train station has wank staff.
pack light, theres loads of places to do washing.
read reviews before booking hostels, we learnt that right away first day interrailing in paris, bed seemed to have blood stains on it and it had bed bugs.
keep count of your money, stay longer in cheaper places and get the fuck out of rip off places like paris.
dont take the taxi's that people offer you inside the train station, we got charged some thing like 30euro in prague for a 5min taxi journey
wet whipes are your friend
bring an ipod and a spare set of head phones.
any thing else you need to know or want to know just pm me |

i was there twice, that day and that night. as i said on another part of my post about night trains that you wont get on them without reservation, i learnt that because of berlin train station.
we asked 4 members of staff for info and not one would give us some, when the 2am train arrived we asked was it the correct train but every member of staff said it wasnt, turns out it was and we had to get the next train at 6am.
as i also said the whole post was in my opinion and my experiance and im only trying to help. no need to be arrogant |

Ok, I'm thinking of going Interrailing throughout the month of July. I turn 26 on August 1st so this is my last opportunity to grab hold of a Youth ticket which is costing me considerably less than an Adult one. Given the options, the "10 days within 22 days" ticket looks like the sensible one to go for. So lets say my trip will cover July 1st to July 22nd.
There are a few milestones already mapped out. I hope to be spending July 7th-9th at Metal Magic festival in Denmark, I have to attend a wedding in Bruges/Belgium on July 16th and I need to end my trip on July 21st in South-east Germany (Possneck - Hells Pleasure festival). I have a lot of days inbetween so I'm trying to figure out what to do.
I have a very rough idea of where I want to go but it's basically an open book apart from the milestones listed (in fairness, Metal Magic isn't set in stone yet). Suggestions? Advice? |

| Whatever you do, make sure you visit Krakow for a few days. I enjoyed every second of my time there last summer and can't recommend it enough. |

Barry - on your way either to or from Copenhagen, make sure to stay in Hamburg for a couple of days. It's a deadly place combining the very grand and the very sleazy and everything in between. Lots of great bars and good cheap beer.
If you're anywhere nearby, Munich is also a great place for sightseeing, boozing and food.
In Belgium make sure to visit Antwerp for excellent architecture, good cheap food and beer and the brilliant De Rots metal bar/venue/hostel/shop.
On your way to Belgium you could stop somewhere in the Netherlands. I really like Utrecht. A very nice medium sized city with great bars and less of the tourist furore than Amsterdam.
I'm not sure whether your itinerary would allow you to go into eastern Europe, but I agree with Simon that Poland is worth visiting. |

Some overall points.
I've sadly never interrailed but I've travelled a fair bit around Europe, so here are a couple of tips.
Germany is well worth exploring and much cheaper than you'd think. Food and drink can be found at very reasonable prices everywhere and are invariably good. Metal is easy to find and there are lots of historic cities with plenty to see.
Further to the recommendations of Kraków, I'd also point out that there are other places worth visiting in Poland. Warsaw lacks the beauty and charm of Kraków (to say the least) but it is extremely interesting historically and is a very good place for boozing and eating. Gdansk combines historic relevance with an Old Town that rivals Kraków's and also has the sea if you fancy a trip to the beach, either in Gdansk itself or in its sister city Sopot. Other cities more off the beaten track such as Poznan or Lublin have their fair share of nice buildings and you can really eat or drink there very well at rock bottom prices.
If you're in Italy, definitely go to Rome. Unmissable places, one of the best in the world. Regarding food, it is easy to end up paying over the odds for mediocre food aimed at tourists, but move away a bit from the main tourist haunts and you'll eat very, very well without paying too much. "I Clementini" (which is quite close to the Colosseum so not far from the beaten track) is one example: http://www.tripadvisor.ie/Restaurant_Review-g187791-d1789073-Reviews-I_Clementini-Rome_Lazio.html. One of the best restaurants I've ever been too and not too dear.
If travelling down through Italy to Rome, consider stopping in Bologna rather than Florence. Florence, though clearly a beautiful and historic place, is jam packed with tourists all year round, particularly summer. Bologna is extremely nice in its own right, has better food and nightlife and is nowhere near as full of tourists. |

| Simon, John - thanks for the info! I wasn't planning on touching Eastern Europe but it looks like I have to fit Krakow into my itinerary somewhere. It sounds amazing. I don't think I'll be going near Italy this time around but I'll keep it in mind. I've been to most major cities in Germany at this stage (Hamburg on 3 occasions for a total of 7/8 days - I love it!) so I'm going to leave that country until we spend the usual days in between HP and HOA. |

One possibility might be to go from Denmark down to Belgium, perhaps through Holland, then after the wedding get a cheapo flight to Poland (from Charleroi you can definitely fly cheaply to Gdansk and Warsaw, probably also to Krakow but I don't know) and then go from there to Possneck by train again. I know that getting a plane while interrailing is cheating a bit, but I don't see any handy way of going from Denmark to Belgium to Possneck via Poland by train... |

I'd do it to avoid seeing your bleedin mush again.
Yeah myself and Alice did it in 2008 and it was one of the best experiences of my life. We got a six week ticket and started in Berlin. We did a week in Stockholm before hand then got a flight to Berlin for 20quid. We did 12 countries, alot of people do 2-4 countries/cities but I thought that seemed like a waste of a ticket and an opportunity, we wanted to do and see as much as possible and not waste any time. In some places we spent 1 day, because really places like Bratislava haven't got much worth seeing or that would convince you to spend an extended amount of time there, other places we spent 4 or 5 days because places like Athens are absolutely amazing.
We did most of our travelling on night trains to avoid wasting time that could be spent seeing and doing things, this also cut the cost of hostels a fair bit. Some night trains have a bad reputation and are notoriously dangerous, we never had a bad experience but if you don't feel comfortable do yourself a favour and pay the extra 5 or 10 quid and get a bunk, if you're sharing with mates it most likely just be ye in the room and you get a decent nights sleep and its still cheaper than hostels in most places. The route we took was Berlin-Prague-Krakow-Bratislava-Vienna-Budapest-Belgrade-Sofia-Thessaloniki-Athens-Patras-Bari-Rome-Barcelona-Alicante, then flew home. I highly recommend Berlin but, being a metalhead you're bound to be there plenty in the future so I wouldnt spend too long there. Prague, Krakow and Budapest are absolutely beautiful and must-sees (each city is cheaper than the last too, which is a bonus). While in Prague check out the ST. Vitus Cathedral and go to the Bone Church/ the Ossuary in Kutna Hora, about and hour outside Prague by train. Prague also has the cheapest and most amazing vegetarian restaraunt, I'll find the details if you're interested. Deadly metal bar called 'Hell's Bells' in Prague too. Krakow is a killer city too, while there go check out Auschwitz-Birkenau which isn't too far by train. Wouldn't bother with Bratislava, not much there. Vienna is a pretty cool place but we arrived over a national holiday so there was fuck all open. Budapest is the business, we arranged to arrive while the Sziget festival was on, its one of the biggest music festivals in the world and goes on for 7 days, amazing food and buzz aswell as some killer bands, we caught Carcass at it. The statue park with all the old communist statues is well worth checking out, pretty surreal. Belgrade is worth seeing for the absolute state of the place, there are shanty towns about ten minutes outside of the capital and you can really see the effects of the war on the city even now. Try goulash whilst there. Sofia hasn't got much to it, again its pretty surreal and probably how you would imagine the Eastern Europe to look. Thessaloniki has some cool record stores, was only there for a day but it was a nice day. Athens is an amazing city, deadly record stores and historical sites, make it your business to meet Jim and Greg from EatMetal Records, two of the soundest cunts you could meet. Rome is deadly for a few days, lots to see, some good clubs, no metal and from what I experienced crap yet ridiculously priced food. Barcelona is a fucking deadly city, really beautiful place with a beach at the bottom of the main shopping street, tons of museums, galleries, record stores and metal bars and surprisingly cheap. Don't go to Alicante, we went to visit it family but it's just a kip full of Irish and English criminals and scumbags. I wish we could have gotten to get to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey and Romania but unfortunately the trains just didn't run often enough and they were too big/awkward to get to. By all accounts of all the travellers we met, Romania is a dodgy shithole, I'd like to have gone to see for myself but thats what we heard.
I'd advise planning your route wisely, plan to be in cities with a particularly good nightlife over weekends, the likes of Berlin, Prague, Krakow, Budapest, Athens, Rome and Barcelona are all deadly at night. Travel by night trains where possible to save time and money. Drink every night and try different bars, meet as many people, particularly locals, as you can and drink and eat where they do. Be confident dealing with staff in places like restaraunts and train stations to ensure you're not getting ripped off and if you think you are, you probably are so don't take any shit.
I hope some of that helps.
This is great!
Mate suggested the idea of interrailing a few nights ago and have been doing as much reading as possible since. Seems like a now or never oppourtunity.
We're thinking of doing 30 days? Daunted by the prospect of cabin fever over such a long period but maybe just over thinking it
Havn't travelled much in Europe so this would be a great way to see bits of everything to begin with. Going to be Mid July to August time so thinking we could squeeze in a festival at some stage.
Few people suggested organising the start destination and final destination and the first few days of accomdation then just work a few days at a time incase we like a particular city more than others? |

Culture vs Shagaluf eh. Would say due to the cost, mates bailing out is very likely in my scenario too. All part and parcel of the nature of the trip and the student lifestyle right |
