Re: Borbetomagus
woah, anyone got $760 they'd like to throw my way ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170564341476
it'd be awesome if folks travelled down for this show. i hate to bust out the L word but borbetomagus are about as legendary as they come. and as utterly mindblowing as the records are, nothing comes close to the live show. snuff jazz is up on ubuweb if anyone unfamiliar with the band wants to check them out ... http://www.ubu.com/sound/borbetomagus.html ... ignore the last paragraph on that page there, presume it's referring to ellen fullman (who is also amazing but in a very different way to borbeto) and ended up there due to some lazy copy & paste. the cd reissue, by the way, has some extra tracks, so if you're into them, it's definitely still worth picking it up
anyway, as for general noise, since both kevin drumm and john wiese were mentioned a good few times above, their recent collab lp is amazing. john wiese is a member of smegma now too. haven't picked up the new one on important yet but there's been a bunch of stuff that's come out over the past year or so that he's played on, all of which has been great ... lp on la station radar with lafms telethon revisited set, buncha kommissar hjuler & mama baer splits (2 lp's + tape) and a recent opera mort split tape
edit: ugh, sleep deprived typos all over the shop |

by the way, a friend asked me for some noise recommendations a while back so i dug it out again and uploaded it here if anyone's interested. i got pretty carried away at the time so seemed a bit excessive to post directly here. just looking through it again now though and there's loads i missed. john wiese - circle snare should be there for sure. dramatic accessories and soft punk too, and sissy spacek - california ax. prob loads more i can't think of right now.
(edit: nww, p16.d4, mb, broken flag vod set, etc should be in the above too!)
also, i didn't mention any sound poets, musique concrete or early electroacoustic/electronic. if anyone's interested in any of those, the following box sets are mindblowing and should be available pretty cheaply if you shop around a bit ...
revue ou ... sound poetry ... http://www.discogs.com/Various-Revue-OU/master/214056
source: music of the avant garde - source records 1-6, 1968-1971 ... http://www.discogs.com/Various-Source-Records-1-6-1968-1971/release/1657441
acousmatrix - the history of electronic music ... http://www.discogs.com/Various-Acousmatrix-The-History-Of-Electronic-Music/release/1891514
archives grm ... http://www.discogs.com/Various-Archives-GRM/master/277861
... the luc ferrari and bernard parmegiani box sets are incredible too, if you want a hefty hit of one particular artist
also, any number of creel pone releases. personal favourites are
anestis logothetis - "hor!-spiel"/nekrologlog 1961/fantasmata 1960
ruth white - flowers of evil
josef anton riedl - s/t
dub taylor - lumiere: for synthesized concrete sound
max e. keller/martin scwarzenlader - sozialistische musiker initiative
nik pascal - the complete narco records & tapes recordings (1971-1975)
jean-claude eloy - shanti
heins hoffman-richter - music to freak your friends and break your lease
those first three in particular are incredible
oh yeah, i haven't gotten around to properly checking out the edition rz catalogue (financial constraints) but pretty much everything there looks amazing and very well curated. actually, the only one i have is the xenakis one, which would happily suffice if i had to live with just one album for the rest of my life
oh, and mauricio kagel pretty much blows everyone out of the water. acustica rules beyond belief. i wish deutsche grammophon would get their shit together and get some sort of proper reissue series going. there was a different performance of acustica released on cd a few years ago, which is amazing of course, but the original version has still never been reissued. it's up on ubuweb though and, if you only listen to one thing today blah blah blah ...
... dunno if people know about this site already or not but there's loads of amazing shit along the lines of the above for download here ... http://www.avantgardeproject.org/
also, only discovered this one here the other week ... http://zomgzvonna.posterous.com/ ... wow! |

oh yeah, and some releases from this year that have fried my brain ...
putrefier - solar dragging
column one - prasident der sonne
k2 - brainwash education
junko & michel henritzi - berlin no tsuki
the junko & michel henritzi one consists of two live recordings last year, around about the same time as the dublin show. one solo junko set and one duo set. the solo set is the clincher though. 40 unrelenting minutes of solo junko. mindblowing! even outdoes her sleeping beauty solo lp from a few years back
also, that new joe colley 3xlp set looks incredible. can't wait to get my hands on it |

for my own tastes, tochnit aleph/rumpsti pumpsti is the best, hands down ... http://mailorder.rumpsti-pumsti.com/index.php
run by daniel lowenbruck who records as raionbashi (and a load more aliases in the past) and runs the tochnit aleph label. his own stuff and everything on tochnit aleph is all amazing too. the store itself is almost worth a trip to berlin alone. loads more rare stuff there that doesn't get listed on the website.
also, some others that are great too ...

also, jojo hiroshige (hijokaidan/alchemy recs) sells direct on ebay ... http://myworld.ebay.com/kishidashin/
he used to have a lot more alchemy titles for sale but seems to be running low these days. also, dunno if it's still the case but in the past i used to mail him (through ebay) with a list of alchemy titles that i was looking for that weren't listed for auction and he'd send back an invoice for whatever he had available. alchemy titles were (/still are) hard enough to come across and were pretty expensive when you did find them but jojo used to sell them direct for $10 (+ $2 or something shipping) a piece. also, re: the fact that titles are for auction, if you're looking to buy a certain title and someone bids before you, just wait til jojo relists the item after the current auction ends. doesn't apply to the 30xcd hijokaidan box set obviously though. actually, that box set has been going for $100 - $150 recently which is ridiculously cheap for what you're getting (shipping is just an extra $3 or something). if you're into hijokaidan and can afford it, i give it 7 thumbs up
actually, i've never gotten around to ordering direct from them but you can get p.s.f. titles direct too ... http://www.psfrecords.com/

as for labels, i pretty much try to pick up everything from chocolate monk (direct) ... http://chocolatemonk.co.uk/enter.htm ... other than that, i usually go through above distros |

Ha, not much can be added to that! Some dupes I can recommend:
At War With False Noise (UK)
Freak Animal / Northern Heritage (Finland)
Ground Fault (USA)
RRRecords (USA)
Second Layer (UK)
Self Abuse Records (USA)
Troniks-Pacrec (USA)
Turgid Animal (UK)
Mimaroglu Music Sales and Volcanic Tongue have phenomenal catalogs too, though they stock so much I've never been able to choose what to get... Great stuff at Tochnit Aleph too, at very reasonable prices - haven't ordered from them before but will soon.
RRR and Troniks often have good deals going - links and picks earlier in the thread.
Some killer recommendations there, ddmurph, or at least going by the small few I've heard from your lists. Too much music, too little time! Totally agree on the Japanese stuff - Hanatarash & Gerogerigegege! Remember hearing them on Peel and thinking "what in the fuck..."
Some other noise news - As Loud As Possible zine is finally out, this month's Wire magazine has an interview with Vomir and William Bennett does the Invisible Jukebox feature, reissues of Sheer Hellish Miasma on 2LP, MB's original SFAG 81 (w/reworks from Nordvargr, raison d'etre and Erik Jarl) and Com SA/Computers SPA all out or nearly. Some other stuff too, just can't think right now... |

nothing like dragging up an old thread from the depths of memory!
the "People Who Do Noise" doc was mentioned before, but I just came across it today in full on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYRw-fEG874
interesting to hear how most of the noise-ists speak about the humour aspect within their performance, but also fascinating to see how much passion & seriousness is also conveyed... albeit with a belief that they are out-punking punk rock!
for me, it's a genre i've struggled with as I tend to like just a little noise or dissonance with my melodies...
I do like William Bennett's Cut Hands latest release - not strictly noise though... |

Edit,
Just watched this, really enjoyed it actually. I don't know a huge amount about noise but the attitudes from the people in this documentary and the people I know who make noise seems to be the same in general "Its mainly about making sounds we like", which is as good a philosophy as any in my opinion.
The little row about the feedback loop was funny. And the comments on the comedy aspect are well noted. I really liked the performance GOD did. Very cool to see someone hack into a synth with crocodile clips during a live performance.
A huge appeal to me with the noise/drone/electronic scene is the DIY aspect that is so strong. I am amazed with the stuff people in these scenes have built. |

And I shall be the first to point out that I don't really see them having anything to do with this thread.More of a no-wave/noise rock band than the harsh noise and power electronics we're discussing here.
Good band though. |
