Band: Guttrench (Ireland)
Album: Capture Release Kill (2011)
Genre: Brutal Death Metal

At first this EP’s music and me eluded each other, like the North and South poles have been eluding each other for quite a while now. Then I found out, once again – and you wonder whether I brushed out my brain when I did my teeth this morning – that Death Metal comes to its full right only – ONLY – when it’s played at volume settings that kill small children and critters smaller than a medium-sized dog.

And from that moment on I started to enjoy Capture Release Kill, Ireland’s Guttrench’s latest release more by the second. It the style of Brutal Death Metal it’s pretty goddamn brutal Death Metal! But more than just a gathering of noisy components, Guttrench brings a lot of fuckin’ talent to the party. I’d go as far as to call this intelligently put together, which is not something you can say of most Brutal Death releases. And moreover, it just sounds very pleasant, except if you’re a toddler or a medium-sized dog perhaps.

Just as its title, the music on Capture Release Kill has this deep, brutal sadistic undertone. Aimed at inducing sufferance for petty pleasure. It’s like a constant assault on one’s eardrums, drums thundering like rolling storms in the distance, guitars laying down a carpet bomb of sharp tremolo picking and brutal riffs, and vocals that have no other intention than chew your ears off. It’s kinda like being in the center of an Apache Gunship Hellfire attack, I imagine. Violence raining down on you like there’s no tomorrow (and in fact, in case of Apache attack there usually isn’t).

So, no, it’s not intelligence at the expense of brutality. Rather the band has opted to synchronize their respective instruments and work together at creating structured noise, as opposed to just a big fuckin’ pile of notes and beats. The instruments reinforce each other, something best evidenced from the EP’s closing track, Sadistic Slaughter. It’s rich in tasty riffs and equally rich in razor sharp hooks and I just totally dig those thundering drums.

The EP doesn’t get any better than this, but in all honesty, this is already very fuckin’ pleasing! Though the three other songs on the EP do not reach quality levels of Sadistic Slaughter, each of them is still pretty tasteful. I know I’m actually genuinely enjoying this and that’s special for someone who hardly ever listens to Brutal Death. I don’t have the illusion this is going to convince those that only listen to the milder forms of Extreme Metal, to tread into the land of Death Metal that punches you out, but to those somewhere in the middle, this band may be worthy to expand their comfort domain around.

My Grade: 7.5/10
Buy this when:

you don’t spend your life with a dog or toddler around
you want some Brutal Death with actual quality!

Cheers man, can't go wrong with Mick at the helm, really happy with the job he did. Fuck, Sound for the heads up didn't cop that.
