Went back to leviathan there after giving this one a few spins, noticed the drumming more than anything, it's so much more toned down on this album. A good thing in my opinion, some of that stuff he's at on leviathan is so superfluous.

Wouldn't agree with that at all. Haven't really listened to the new one but the drumming on Leviathan is bang on the money. Remission, in hindsight, would prob drive ya up the wall, if that's the case.

Either way he's one of the best drummers on the planet and can sing while he plays and sing well too.

He's definitely the best singer in the band in a live setting. On record I much prefer Brents voice but the man just cannot pull it off live.

this album is incredibly good, I think its the best thing theyve ever done...they have just matured into an absolute beast of a band. That chorus on Stargasm is just incredible stuff altogether..

It is an amazing album. Its grown and grown the more I listen to it.

I had fears that this was going to be a bit loose and they were giving into putting out any ol shite to rake in the cash due to the lack of a concept but they haven't. Its a solid album.

Hit and miss album. Bedazzled Fingernails, Spectrelight and Blasteroid being the highlights for myself. Curl of The Burl is good too. Sounds a lot like QOTSA. The Creature Lives is catchy but sounds like it could appear on the score to the next Shrek film. Lyrics are terrible throughout. Good artwork on the digipack. The first 3 and Crack the Skye are still by far their best albums I reckon.

would agree with that, put it on today and it bored the bollox off me,it relies too much on hooks which gets old very quick

This release to me is their "get it out of our system" album.

Mastodon are a band who have little left to prove (apart from upping their game as far as live vocals are concerned) and I reckon they approached this recording with a bit of a take the piss mentality.

The songs feel like outtakes from CTS and Blood Mountain that the band still wanted to get out there but just didn't fit the flow of said releases.

Spectrelight is something else when you're flooring it down the M50 though. Very Happy

don't agree with the outtakes oinion, the album is just too superior for that. I think a lot of people are getting hung up on the name and artwork. for me its their 'Going for the One'. Like Yes they've moved away from the concept album principle which was starting to paint them into a corner. I think its a really brave move, its fresh and it could open whole new avenues for them. Definitely one of the last true metal bands out there worthy of attention, taking risks and doing something new every time. They've brought back beautiful warm Gibson solos, harmony and songwriting, a pleasant antidote to polka metal and djent style extreme metal.

have it blasting now while washing the dishes, I mean how good are Stargasm, Blasteroid, Curl of the Burl fuken class! The Hunter sounds like they brought Slash into the studio..Dry Bone Valley rocking like a mutherfuker, could almost be from Facelift along with the Thickening and The Sparrow one of the best outros ever. Class altogether!

They are bringing out some new vinyl for Record Store Day.

Quote:
The Georgia metallers, who just completed their largest UK tour to date, will release a cover of Wayne Coyne and co's 'A Spoonful Weighs A Ton' and Feist's 'A Commotion' on 7'' vinyl next month. Feist will in turn cover Mastodon's 'Black Tongue' for her own vinyl release.
