I remember the first Falklands War from magazines/comics like Commando, Warlord and Victor. Letters written in from kids whose brothers were serving in the army there.

One thing that seems to be forgotten in all this is that the first war was more to do with invigorating Britain's 'bulldog spirit' as Thatcher had recently come to power, the country was in the doldrums economically so what better way to get old blighty to rally round the banner and defend it than have a war many thousands of miles away. The symbolism behind that particular conflict at the time was massive. It was also a show of military strength and ability for the USSR in case of any potential conflict (the Cold War was still very much in effect at this time). Be very difficult to see an actual physical conflict develop out of this.

I lived in London for 9 years as a child during the 80s so I was exposed to their military fetish / cult at a time when it was in overdrive. I used love the Commando comics as well and by the time I was 6 would be running around the place declaring how badly I wanted to kill "Jerry" Laughing I'd an irrational dislike of Argentinians as well, though that was probably more to do with the '86 World Cup than the war in the falklands.

Amazing how slick the cult is these days with the likes of X Factor playing its part in "hero" worship and general militaristic fetishism. Very hard to openly question or criticise Britain's imperial jaunts in an atmosphere like that I'd imagine.

Well it seems David Cameron is more keen to get into Somalia to "protect British interests" i.e. prevent further Chinese investment in Africa by destabilisation, then re-stabalise under a western favoured government. That's essentially the name of the game right now.

Wait no, its all humanitarian, about protecting tourists (did Thomas Cook do package holidays to Somalia?).

It's not quite that simple. Somalia is far from stable as it is, nevermind destablising it and bringing in a western favoured government. And there is no Chinese investment in Somalia.

However, China and India combined have about $150 billion invested in about 50 africa nations. Most of this is developing and emerging markets and thus coming from various offshore finance centres like Seychelles, Mauritius. Alot of money going into Botswana at the minute as its setting itself as a international finance/business centre.

Far from Somalia in terms of investment, business and infrastructure. I think any nation going into Somalia is humantarian cause and has been for many years, its been helped and abandonded many times over.

Radical Islamists, Pirates and a government whose power barely extends beyond the parliament building, Thomas Cook will have great success selling that one Laughing

I think it'll just end up as a load of diplomatic shouting, but if a shooting war was to break out, I'd say it could easily result in a different outcome to the last one.
In a straight fight, the British Army would be able to defeat the Argentine Army, but actually getting the task force down there would be a whole different ballgame compared to 1982. While the Argies are still pretty much flying the same stuff they were 30 years ago (Skyhawks, Mirages, etc) the British Armed forces have been slashed to the point where logistically it would be an utter nightmare doing anything down there. No carriers, no Harriers, no long range patrol aircraft, no long range bombers, etc.
Can't see the 4 Typhoons based down there doing a lot either.

And judging by his comments over the past few months, Obama wouldn't be nearly as supportive as Reagan was during the 82 scrap.

And Commando comics are still around, a local shop has a whole bunch of them every month. Still good reading. Laughing
