I started playing guitar a while back and am looking to record parts so I can practice playing with another piece.
I've seen a few recommendations on here for various bits of kit to do this, but they are all quite expensive. Is there a way to do this on a budget with decent results?
I was thinking along the lines of this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Behringer-UCG102-USB-Guitar-Link/dp/B000PAPO9W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1325861385&sr=8-2
But obviously a lot of the feedback is that there is lag, which is not a major issue for what I want it for, but if possible I would prefer there were none.
I saw the Line 6 gx/ux recommended on here, but at £80, it's just a bit out of my price range right now.
Thanks for the help |

Honestly you get what you pay for when it comes to recording gear. Also it's generally advised that if a piece of gear says Behringer it's probably better avoided!
A lot of people get decent results with the Line 6 stuff and it's designed for guitarists, it might be worth just saving for that as it's still not that expensive compared to a decent interface. |

Had one of those behringers before, awful heap of shite, avoid it. Laggy and very noisy, very frustrating piece of equipment to use.
I'd recommend saving up a bit more and getting a decent 2 input interface. If you get something with a good name/reputation, you're gonna save yourself the hassle that nearly inevitably comes along with the cheaper stuff and it'll make playing/recording a lot easier/pleasurable to do. Also by getting a interface, you could use it for recording vocals/bass down the line.
I'd recommend a Focusrite Saffire 6 if you're looking for a very clean interface that will give you good results, should be able to pick one up secondhand for around 130 euro.
There's so many great free amp sims out there at the moment as well that you wouldn't have to get buy anything else to be able to get good sounding guitar tracks. |

Ok cool, thanks for the advice. I'll save up a bit and get something worthwhile rather than the cheap crap.
Quite looking forward to it now. |

| While we're on the subject. For practice, I play my guitar through a pedal board and then hook the pedal up to my stereo through the aux. Is there a simple way for me to hook the stereo up to the computer to record? |

Have you some sort of amp simulator/multi fx on the pedalboard? If so, you might have a headphone out from that which you could connect up to the line in on your computer, as that should be able to take a line level signal. You could use a program like Reaper to record that signal then. |

| if it's just for practise recording, go cheap and cheerful and keep your eye out for a Line6 TonePort. I've got one and it's handy as hell. Plug it into your pc, plug your guitar into it, and away you go. Amp/effects chain/cab simulators on it are decent and it comes with Ableton Lite recording software. Proper handy bit of kit. |

This.
We do all the Red Six demoing through it. The drum loops you can download to jam with are great and if you are using another piece of recording software with say, Drumkit From Hell, the possibilities are limitless. |

if you're looking a toneport i'll sell you one that's been used twice, with all the bits for it, for £50 |

Guitarig/amplitube etc aren't bad but the Cab emulators on them aren't great. In order to get a better sound on recordings I've been using impulses.
I'm not even sure how they work but basically someone has actually recorded how a certain Cab and created a file that recreates the tonalities and reverberation properies of that actual cab. If you use the available head's on amplitube, bypass thier cab simulators and use impulses instead you can get some pretty decent tones.
I'm still a learner myself though so don't take my word for gospel!! |

I have a decent Roland USB interface. When I try recording from my amp to the PC there is an awful lot of crackling and interference.
Granted my amp is a small affordable little thing but it sounds fine normally and even with headphones. When I plug the guitar directly into the interface it sounds fine.
I am hoping to get a new multi-effects pedal soon, if I plug the pedal directly to the interface am I right in saying I should not expect any crackling or interference like I'm getting from the amp? |
