Not listened to this one in an eternity. Will chuck it on later. Enjoyed it when it came out but always think the best thing they ever did was the mini LP. I can't stand Grutle's 'Jack Russell' bark. So one dimensional.

I read recently that the drummer (Harald Hegelson?) was now in some rock tribute band. What a waste!

I remember being told or reading somewhere that he was never really into metal that much, more rock/hard rock. Apparently the lads had to show him how to blast.

Listened to the first album the other night actually. Still hit and miss really. Their best stuff for me was the Emperor and Satyricon splits.

Darragh, probably an exaggeration here, but couldn't that be applied to Lemmy's vocals as well? I mean, the moment you hear it,you damn well know who it is? Lack of distinctive vocalists has been an issue for a long time now, not to mention Grutle did know of his limitations and tried to keep things fresh by adding those chanting ones as well.

As far as vocals are concerned - things turned sour on me with the last two albums, I can't really stand the keyboard's guy ones....

The MLP is great,no arguing here - I wish I'm 17 again Wink

I've seen Grutle's harsh vox bashed on this forum before but have never understood this - always felt he a had a distinctive, powerful shriek up there with the best.

Irritates the shit out of me, especially on anything after 'Eld'. That's the last album I liked by 'em.

I wish I was half cut and listening to this.

Only recently discovered it. Great album and I can already feel it putting their more recent out-put in their place of seldom listened to.

I just listened to it there for the first time in at least 2 years and my feelings towards it remain the same. It has the worst wooden drum sound imaginable. The riffs are too simple and too scratchy. The keyboards sound terribly cheap and tinny. I would still however rate it as a stone cold classic. Along with Anthems it epitomises atmospheric black metal. You can just see those villages burning. I would only give it a 9.9/10 because it is not Hordanes Land / Vikingligr Veldi and they are perfect. I much preferred them when they were a Regressive Metal band and certainly not the boring shit they put out today

I love the drum sound on this,The wooden snare and sharp cymbal crashes adds to the atmosphere and concept behind it my opinion,
My Favourite Enslaved album also, I havent really liked anything they have done since though,

It's not my favourite Enslaved album, but it is excellent. What a month it was when it came out, Emperor's Anthems and Dimmu Borgir' EDT were reviewed in the same issue of Terrorizer. I think that the drum sound is class, and the guitar sound suit the album quite well.
