As John said, death and black metal both share a similar feel or atmosphere, just channelled in different ways so when done right there should be a certain level of crossover between the two styles. Some serious death metal coming out these days alright and some bands really pushing the style in new directions while keeping that dark twisted core. Antediluvian, Mitochondrion and Portal deserve a mention in that regard. I have to say though, of all the great bands mentioned the ones I'm most excited about hearing new stuff from is the utterly depraved sounding SWALLOWED!

More praise for Graves of the Archangels here. It really is superb. I hardly listened to any death metal before this but it completely blew me away the first time I heard it.

Teitanblood got a mention above, thankfully. They're definitely not a band to overlook if you're interested in death metal nowadays. I'm listening to Seven Chalices at the moment and it's still the oppressive torrent of black filth it was when I got it a few years ago. Purging Tongues is worth picking up too.

Oh yeah, Drowned - Viscerae Terrae is fucking ESSENTIAL!! 20 minutes of absolutely perfect DM.

It's interesting how divergent 'death metal' as a genre is. The type of death metal being listed here is the kind that is, essentially, derived some the same kind of source as black metal - moods, atmosphere, spirituality, darkness and so forth. There are so many other kinds of death metal that have nothing to do with these kinds of things and are especially lacking in feel/atmosphere but go for technicality, musicianship and brutality.

It really is a healthy scene at the minute. Long may it last. The bands mentioned have a lot more staying power than the hundreds of bands replicating the Swedeath sound. As someone mentioned Invidious I'll harp in and say that the demo is animal.

For the sake of throwing another two names onto the list, Diocletian and Witchrist are top of the game as well.

I think Malte left them a while ago. I'm not sure if they're even active or looking for a replacement though.

As a genre, it's definitely experiencing a 'back to basics' shot to the arm, which is seeing some cracking material appear. Thumbs up to most of the bands named so far.

Resurgent atavism for genres like death and black metal can only mean good things.

The Thorns of Hate demo from a couple of years ago was also fucking whopper and well worth a shout in this thread. Somewhere between Diocletian and Cruciamentum and utterly destructive. They have a 7" out too but I haven't heard it yet. Check 'em out.

I was just listening to some Disma tracks from the Towards the Megalith album on youtube. Well worth a mention here. Do ye have the album in the shop Darragh?
