I just can't get my head round impedance. Even thinking about it makes me want to drink beer, so I was wondering if anyone can answer this question.

I have a 50W Laney Pro Tube Lead (AOR series) combo. Currently, it's running 8ohms into its resident 1x12. Now if I was to plug a 4x12 into the other speaker output and run it concurrently with the built in speaker, what would I need to change the impedance to?

If you plugged a 8ohm 4x12 into it, you'd be running at 4ohms.

The only problem is that the power will be split evenly between the 1x12 and the 4x12, so the 1x12 will be getting 4 times the power that each speaker in the 4x12 is getting. This means your 1x12 would be getting overpowered before the 4x12 even starts getting going.

Youd be better pairing it with another 1x12.

Can you plug out the resident/internal speaker?

often times you can, I've seen Peavey combos that allow you do it.

I'd say with the vast majority of amps you can but my question is about the OP's amp. Anyways just did a bit of research myself and seems you can so I'd say plug that out and set the impedance on the amp to match the impedance of the 4x12 you want to use and ignore the internal speaker.

Go to the back where you see wiring diagrams.

Once upon a time I found this really helpful for getting the hang of the whole ohms thing.

Not exactly comprehensive, but helpful enough.

Not entirely sure what they mean by safe mismatch though... I certainly wouldn't bet on it.

Best stick to correct match.

Cheers folks. Seems the safest would be to pull out the current speaker before plugging in a 4X12

Safe mismatches only exist with certain amps such as the Mesas, with most manufacturers stating if a mismatch is possible. I'd avoid any mismatch with the likes of Marshall as their OTs aren't the best quality at all.
