I've wanted a 7-string for the last few years, mostly for mucking about on and playing around with. So I'm not looking to get something crazy expensive but also know that you get what you pay for.
So has anyone had much experience or any recommendations for a 7-string? What was good/bad about it and was it worth the money? |

You cant really go wrong with any of the low to mid range Seven's out there. Ibanez, Schecter, ESP/LTD etc. It all depends on what you want form the guitars.
There is a good variety in what spec you can get and also on what price you will pay for it. Have you any idea what you want? Price wise? Spec wise?
Just to give you an idea of what can be gotten for what prices, I'm selling one of my Seven's, its a 2005 Ibanez RG7321 with some mods/upgrades for 300 Euro - http://www.metalireland.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=52655
I've been playing Seven's for a couple of years now and love them. I'm of the mindset that I think every guitarist should at least own one Sevenstring. |

I'm looking to spend at most about 500e.
A tremolo system would be nice, but I'm not sure how well they work on 7 strings. I've seen one Schecter on Thomann that looks pretty good for the money and the specs |

As far as tremolo systems go, they need to be decent for 7-strings. I had a BC Rich 7 string with the most useless licensed floyd I have ever encountered, but when I retrofitted an original one, I never had to tune it again. I'm playing a Mayones Regius Pro 7 with an original floyd now, and its never gone out of tune in the 2 years I've owned it.
For that sort of budget, I'd go for a Schecter, they're great guitars for reasonable money. And if there's anything you want to modify, you have a bit of change to play with. |

Yeah for around 500 quid you'll get a good Schecter and their Floyds are decent so you shouldnt have any problems with it.
Whats the exact model you are looking at? |

Good guitar that, but the pickups may not be up to much, they are the "Duncan Designed" version of the Blackouts. But your not gonne get top of the range pickups in any of the mid-range seven strings, save for EMG's in a couple of ESP/LTD models.
I say go for it if you really want it, worst thing that could happen is you dont like it and sell it on! |

Not a 7-stringer myself or a user of V's, but I love the look of that BC Rich!
The thing about BC Rich though is that their high spec, reasonably priced guitars are often too good to be true. Obviously, an official floyd and grover tuners means just that, but in my experience (specifically with a mockingbird) they skimp fairly severely on the woods they use in order to keep their prices low.
Their ebony boards are often blemished (my mockingbird had large, sandy coloured patches in the ebony) and the "mahogany" they use is of the very cheap, lightweight variety. Thing is, there's actually no such thing as a mahogany tree per se, it's just a catch-all word to describe hardwoods that are traditionally used in the making of furniture. So any old hardwood can, regardless of its suitability as a tonewood, be labelled Mahogany for marketing purposes and the likes of BC Rich aren't slow to exploit the loophole. |

I like BC Rich, but the way they go about the specifications for some of their models confuses me. For instance, their Assassin line. The ASM Standard comes with Rockfield Mafia pickups, very tasty fellows identical to the ones used in Zoltan Bathory's Signature Model (which is the top end of this particular line of models,) or EMG's. Their ASM Pro however, (think the difference between an LP Standard and an LP Custom) comes in only one flavour of pickup, EMG.
So essentially you can have either p'up in the ostensibly lower end one, but no alternatives in the higher-spec model |

I remember a friend of mine having an entry model BC Rich and I was really really unimpressed by the quality of it. At that time anything else I had seen from other friends were just cheapo knock off strats and the like, this was the first big brand name guitar I'd ever seen. The body felt cheap and the neck was horrible to play, the fret board felt grainy and the hardware was nothing to shout about at all. After seeing it I started thinking the knock off strats were much better value and quality |

I can vouch for the Schecters man, they're nice guitars.
However, you should try to avoid anything with the EMG 707s - lots of the Schecters are mahogany and the EMG's are really bassy so the resulting sound is a bit mushy and crap.
Also, if you want to replace them you will need a pickup of the same dimensions or a pickup cover, otherwise your replacement pickup will have some garish body cavity showing around it.
Not hating on EMG by the way, just letting you know that the 7string=active thing is bullshit for the most part. |

whip out thon 707 and put in an 81/7 Tel, huge difference. Mate of mine did just that and the difference was night and day |
