a) Nope, it's just the same as playing them
b) Yep!

is there any reason why people favour external drives over carefully stored dvd-r's? is there any special process for storing hq files as information as opposed to making a playable disc?

and yes I am a bit slow about all this Laughing

It's just much easier to transfer stuff to an external hard drive and a hard drive will take up less space than a bunch of dvds, also easier to find files again on an external drive. Just dont do what I did and drop the drive on the floor, they dont tend to fare out too well!

Yeah hard drives are better for quick access to to save or retrieve files, but the end product should always be data disc back up's!

Just get decent quality DVD discs. They usually hold 4.7gb, but pound shop ones can be ropey sometimes.

Putting everything onto dvd's seems to defeat the point of digitizing your collection. Why would you rip everything if you weren't trying to get away from optical media?

it's more about gaining something rather than leaving something behind, as you put it optical media...yet the process of gaining 'convenience' seems complex and inconvenient.

Convenience is dumping everything onto one hard drive (With backups somewhere in case you're worried about failure) as opposed to putting everything in 4.7GB chunks spread across however many discs.

Ah just weighing it all up, the 2 hard drives and the required 16gb mp3 player could be dear... not sure if overall it balances out losing the benefits of a physical collection...

do you not have a computer/laptop? You wouldn't need to be buying two of the things... and mp3 players are dirt cheap. If your phone has a micro sd slot, you can pick up a 16GB card for under 10 euro on amazon and that would do the same job as an mp3 player.

edit: Not that I have anything against physical collections, you just really seem to be overestimating how simple this technology is.

If you fill up the 275GB on your laptop with music , your laptop will run as slow as hell. Put it all on an external drive.
