| nice to see someone mention the gap series by donaldson..... not even sure if they would class as sci-fi, more extremely bleak existential horror in a sci-fi setting....I read a few of those books as a young teen and just the gritty, dark, 'adult' themes and scenarios were really fucked, that shit'll etch in yer mind. |

infuckindeed!!
And to think there are still another two for him to write... :/
He maintains he'll have the series finished before the TV show catches up with him. Assuming each book corresponds with 10 episodes, he has 5 years to have the last 2 written. (Assuming Seasons 3+4 consists of the 3r book, which is apparently his plan)
He'll be dead before that series is finished. As much as I love his story... I'm sad to say the length of time he's taking to finish smacks of retirement plan to me. |

| Just finished Ender's Game, pretty good stuff. I was put off reading it as I really disliked Empire. Question is: is the rest of the Ender series worth getting? |

If it hasn't been mentioned already, The Stars My Destination. Very old sci fi book. It's about a guy who's stranded in space for months, thinks he's about to be rescued but the ship flies away without him. So he starts putting together a plan for vengeance. The main character is really great and the story goes beyond his quest for revenge.
Ender's Game is awesome. Not too keen on Neuromancer, found it to be a slog. |

Been on a bit of a sci-fi buzz lately myself, especially dystopian stuff. Read Brave New World and Anthem recently, well worth reading. Anthem is very, very strange.
Neuromancer can be a bit slow in chapters but I enjoyed it. Between it and 1984 it is amazing how much technology they predicted.
Just finished 'Do Androids Dream...' there. Really enjoyed it, the moral implications are interesting as well. Robots hi. Got Dune the other day but I might wait until I get air conditioning to read it. |

Ya the dystopian stuff you mentioned is class. Those were the books that got me into the genre really.
Dune is an absolutely incredible saga. The prequels are imo are worth reading just as much too. Tis a bit of an undertaking if you wanna get thru it all but well worth it |

Just finished the first Ender book myself and am also wondering if the rest of the series is worth reading. |

Speaker for the Dead is worth reading, but by the time I got to Xenocide I'd lost all interest to be honest. I'd recommend giving them go, as I was about 14 when I read them and a lot of the finer points were lost on me I'm sure. |

Yeah the book Xenocide is a tough read in that nothing really happens, but is essential if you want to continue on reading the books. I would urge people who have started the Ender series to finish it. It is such a big universe with so many characters and stories!
The film they are doing is apparently a combination of Enders Game and Enders Shadow, which I'm really looking forward to! |

Anyone ever look at the Science Fantasy genre? So long as the author has some self-control, it can be pretty cool stuff. Justina Robson's Quantum Gravity series is, unfortunately, as much as I've found in bookstores, though that is pretty awesome.
On more regular sci-fi, if that term even exists, Peter F. Hamilton's pretty good. Pandora's Star, anyone? |

Reading first book in CS Friedman's Coldfire trilogy. Written in a fantasy style but the setting is more reminiscent of sci-fi. About a third of the way in. Not greatly impressed so far. I'm generally a completist so will more than likely finish the series (unless someone completely advises me against it?) but at the moment certainly not blown away by it. |
