I've downloaded various cartoons from youtube which don't have dvd releases, as a collection of mp4 clips uploaded from vhs and downloaded as mp4 files...

Thing is, I want to remaster them myself. Is it worth it if you don't have the original reels? And if it's doable, what's a good freeware program ?

Saw this earlier, but never got to reply. I haven't any decent home video correction software about...that kind of thing is more on a professional level. The best you could do with stuff at home is colour correction, but that brings up its own image problems.

I use AVS Video Editor http://www.avs4you.com/AVS-Video-Editor.aspx?type=GoogleAdWordsSearch&gclid=CKqlnITxjbECFcUe4QodrRWsGQ as it seemed the best for working on an XP laptop, but when I recently tried adjusting the colour on some live video, it brought up some pixelation.

How bad are the clips quality wise?

well I have stuff like Thunderbirds 2086, The Queens Nose. Phantom 2040 as mp4 downloaded from youtube, and pretty much everything like Ulysses 31 and so forth on official dvd but unremastered.

pretty much the idea would be to do what I can to unreleased shows and upload the improved versions onto youtube for people to enjoy...but fucking hell, it's an incredibly complex process. Using the program you suggested there to turn mp4 into avi and from avi into virtual dub to get them into isolated cells/frames and then into algosoft for remastering...

its well outside my ability level tbh... Just after converting an mp4 into avi there and virtual dub tells me it needs a VFW codec?

Are you using Vista? I Googled it and found this http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/289379-VirtualDub-being-stupid-%28VFW-codec-%29 seems to have links to give you the codec.

Are the video clips ripped from an official DVD or from a VHS recording of the shows?

the ones Im working on now are just tv rips downloaded from youtube. Just to be safe Im working on shows that never got a release and that the companies dont seem to give a fuck about Laughing

Using XP on the laptop, if theres a one stop shop that can drag an mp4 episode into and get to work it'd be a HUGE help.. or even if you can tell me if the programs above are in the right direction?

I think any real correction would have to come during the initial conversion process. Once a video has been made into a file, it reduces how much can be done with it when it comes to fixing drop out etc. only basic processes, like I've mentioned, can be done. If you upload to YouTube they will now fix up dark picture if you want, but it looks like shit!

so if the original reels and vhs prints aren't available, you're a bit fucked trying to fix them up? Im really just looking to stabilise, fix blacks, boost colours, and maybe see about flecks and spots...this algosoft program looks legit, so if I could just get the avi programs recognised by virtual dub..

just tried to put those codecs into he plugins folder in virtual dub but it still wont work Sad

You can send me one of the files and I could see what AVS can do for it if you want?

sent a youtube link there for an 8 minute section; more straight forward than compressing and emailing a sample from my laptop, but I can go that route if it's more convenient for you

At this rate we can expect to see Michael Aspel posting to ask questions about home recording equipment in about two weeks.
