Buying a guitar like the one you are going for, I would always factor in at least a new bridge pickup. I know its only for messing around with but a poor sounding guitar will leave you cold and not wanting to play it, at least thats what I've found.

If you put maybe 80 to 100 quid on top of the guitar price you could also get a new bridge pickup, anything from an EMG 81-7, 707 or an SD Blackout phase 2. All will be much better than the Duncan Designed pickups that come stock.

That sound's reasonably do able.

What's so bad about the stocks if I might ask? Is it just a case of cheap pick ups to keep costs down?

its not that the stocks are awful per se, (ive a king v loaded qith Designeds and i love em) its just that the upgrades skadk mentioned are so much better. give the designeds a whirl first though, while they arent world beaters they shouldnt be dismissed out of hand

You can sometimes be on to a real winner in terms of stock pickups in cheaper guitars, sometimes they actually sound really good! But, Duncan Designed actives are pure muck. Never heard a good word about them. Muddy, flat and no distinct tone to speak of.

But the passives can be pretty good sometimes, as Mike has said. But again, I'd fork out at least the 80 quid for an EMG 81-7 or 707, it'll be well worth it!

oh, definitely right there. Avoid stock actives like you'd avoid dick-rot. They are, 99 times out of 100, utter SHITE. The other guitarist in a band I used to be in played a Schecter with Duncan Designed actives in it and they were absolute trash. He dropped in a set of EMG's and the thing was suddenly a fire-breather.

Would you recommend going for neck and bridge or just the bridge?

Well if your looking to keep the budget down then just a bridge pickup will do. But if you have the cash for it sure no harm in getting both. It all depends on how much you want to spend!

Last question on it (I think!), would there be any requirement for body work on it if I was to switch out the passives for actives to fit in the extra circuitry for actives?

The pickups in that schecter are actives so putting in an EMG or SD Blackout would be a straight swap. Hopefully they use a quick connect set up so you wouldnt even need to do any soldering.

But going form actives to passives on a 7 string shouldnt need any body work. But as you can see 7 string actives are bass sized so putting a passive in there would leave a big gap in the body around the pickup, but that can be covered up by pickup rings if you can get them.

buy a 2nd hand RG7620, thank me later. comes with dimarzio blaze pickups in neck and bridge. I took mine out and replaced with bk painkillers in purple, all me guitars have either bk or emg (we endorsed by bkp and where possible each guitar has em,mine are painkillers, aarons are nailbombs)
