EDIT: They've just made the official announcement
Quote: Our brand new multi-purpose venue, simply named "The Limelight", opens September 2012 in the space formerly known as "The Spring & Airbrake". It features a brand new, state of the art audio & lighting system install, along with an increase in size, and vastly improved sight lines - all of which will be focused on delivering the best possible customer experience at our upcoming live shows & brand new weekly club nights.
This is just phase one of an ongoing multi-million pound renovation for The Limelight Complex.
The new venue will be located alongside Katy's Bar, and The Limelight 2 (formerly The Limelight). An all new purpose-built outdoor space, christened "The Rock Garden", is also in the pipeline, and will open later this year. The Limelight 2 (formerly the Limelight) and Katy's Bar will also get a well deserved facelift. Keep an eye on limelightbelfast.com for updates as they happen!

Quote: BACKLASH: Belfast's BRAND NEW weekly alternative clubnight, running EVERY WEDNESDAY in The Limelight 2 (formerly The Limelight)
Which leads me to believe that since The Limelight is being renamed The Limelight 2, Spring and Air will now be known as The Limelight.
Looks like Anthrax will take place in The Limelight after all! |

| Wouldn't it be easier to just rename the spring and onion as the limelight 2? |

I'd guess that their reasoning is that because the new S&A is the bigger venue of the two, it should be the 'main' venue. |

| Spring & Airbrake was a cool name for the venue given the wee history behind it n all. |

I'd say the thinking behind it comes from the 02 Academy venues throughout the UK and the way they call the other venues within the building Academy 2 and Academy 3 to represent the decreasing capacity of the rooms.
The venue formally known as S&A will probably hold 600+ now gaining the outright Limelight title, where as the original Limelight will continue to hold 400 and take on the inferior Limelight 2 title. |

| Don't see the point myself. I was in town last Friday night around 9pm and Katys was dead, and stank of varnish/paint thinners/fixative. Two dudes were taking their tops off and mock fighting. It wasn't pleasant. |

Where does the name come from?
Also what are the four floors above the venues used for? Are they completly unused or is that were the bands have mad parties with blackjack and hookers? |

It used to be a garage.
There's various offices and stuff upstairs, sadly, the backstage areas are not nearly as glamorous as you might imagine!

Backstage, everything actually has been ripped out. Stage is much bigger, good few pillars are gone. It's going to be quite a set up in there! |

The offices were sold to the bar and all the people renting the space up there were shifted out rather unceremoniously. It makes me think there is going to be a balcony whenever the renovations are done.
I agree the name change is a bit daft, but at least it explains why Anthrax are to play "The Limelight" and not Spring And Air |

I'm really looking forward to seeing it finished! Last time I was home, Pirate Conor took me round and showed me the room gutted and the pillars coming down, should be impressive alright.
Maybe take a nip in at Christmas for a look.

the name change seems a bit of an odd one to me, as i reckon to anyone who frequented the place, it'll always be the Spring.
However, considering the trade-off is an 800-capacity venue with massively increased floor-space, no pillars to obstruct the view, a proper sized and shaped stage, new PA, new (and fucking amazing) lighting rig, roof-top beer garden and completely new facilities upstaris for green rooms, dressing rooms, etc, they can call it whatever they damn well please |
