See to be honest, I actually prefer Homicide: Life on the Street to the Wire. So much from the Wire was actually already done in Homicide, but it works seeing it again because the Wire is an over-arching socio-political commentary, and Homicide is, at its base, a series of character studies. But it's much more sinister for it, and the camera work, gritty realism and lack of hollywood-esque moments make it a much more powerful statement to me.
Also, it has Andre Braugher as Frank Pembleton, and he alone makes it brilliant. |

I havnt seen Homicide yet, its on my to do list. David Simon stuff needs to be watched in moderation otherwise you become a cynical asshole.
Have you seen The Corner? Thats some gritty shit right there. |

finished season one of Breaking Bad there, unbelievable. Walt sitting in the car after the fulminated mercury moment was an incredible piece of acting. the character's got balls like watermelons.
just read recently that the son has cerebral palsy in real life and stops taking his drugs to make it more realistic. mad. |

The Shield is a lot better than The Wire, The Wire started going downhill after season 3. Homicide is great as well but it's the type of show I couldn't watch for more than 2 hours at a time.
I just finished all 6 seasons of OZ I saw a lot of the episodes years ago when it use to be television but I had forgotten a lot of it. It's one of the best shows I have seen in the last few years along with breaking bad. |

Im afraid ill have to disagree with ye there. While season 4 was a bit of a slow burner, season 5 was unreal. The perfect series in my opinion.
But, i definatly agree with you on this one!

| Loved Red Dwarf as a kid, saw an episode about a year ago and was shocked at how bad it actually is. Kinda like Bottom, best left as a distant memory. |

Well it was put to me like this: " The Wire is Jazz and The Shield is more Rock N' Roll"
Would this be accurate? Ill give it a whirl sure.
Given that Kurt Sutter is the man behind The Shield I would agree with that it's more 'Rock N'Roll'. Really enjoyed the show and actually that's an idea to pick the box set up to have another rattle at it again.
Really need to check Breaking Bad out. Far too many people have said great things about it to me. |

That's a fairly decent description of it actually. Vic Mackey is an absolute brilliant character and its an awful lot more fast paced than The Wire. I think it could be maybe 2 seasons shorter, it lags a little bit in the middle I felt, but the main story carries through the whole show, and the last maybe 10 episodes of the final season are possibly the most intense of any programme I've ever watched. |

I just finished The Shield there the other night. I absolutly loved it! I would agree that it could have been trimmed down a bit and i agree again that the last few episodes were very tense! one criticism from me would be that it can be a little cheesey at times, "I was protecting you, i was protecting the team" sorta thing, cheesy, but at the same time the show still worked.
Stand out characters for me were, Vic obviously, Claudette, Antwon Mitchell and Ronnie in the last 2 seasons. I also loved the comic relief from Billings! "I love the smell of teenage molestation in the mornings"

Already looking forward to 'Sons of Anarchy' season 5. I read that Chuck Zito has buried the hatched with Sutter and is taking on the role of one of the Nomad charter.
Given he was former President of the NYC Hells Angels, he should bring a decent sense of realism to his character. Jimmy Smits of all people cast as a Latino gangbanger. Should be interesting.
Naturally spoiler free but I am looking forward to the interactions between three of the cast members from the fallout of season 4. |
