really? She said most young single people pay no more than 400 euros a month for separate accomodation. Not saying it was a palace but it was warm, dry, clean and there was a communal tv room/pool room/bar and only a 10 minute train journey from Cologne...

I think my peeve is that rental culture is a bit fucked up and expensive in the uk and ireland whereas it seems handy enough in germany from what i can gather...

If it had a "communal" anything then it's certainly not what any normal person would call an "apartment". It was probably something like having your own studio type room with cooking and washing facilities but in a larger complex, like digs. These things exist in Ireland and the UK too. I have friends in southern Germany who pay very little for rent, about 600 for a 40m2 place but shared between two of them. A proper apartment for one person wouldn't be half that though. I know in Munich, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam and London you can pay up to 500 a month for 12m2. Bargain!

All I can say is that it was cool/annoying to see them all having neat little studio apartments to themselves, kind of I gues just a privacy and self containment thing but still with a nice community vibe. As a peeve, I think awkward experience of rental life over here is still fairly valid Smile

Yeah, can't think of anyone over here falling in the young/single category paying more than 350 a month. But then again, it varies a lot regionally. It's a lot tougher to find budget accommodation in the south. Cities in the west tend to be a bit more relexed rent-wise and the east is naturally the most affordable region to live in. A friend of mine pays a little over 200 incl heating, internet etc. for a nice, central flat in Leipzig... bitch.

Just a few examples from the so-called "Mietspiegel" (residential rental index) to illustrate this point:

(average prices in EUR/m²)

Berlin: 7,00
Cologne: 8,20
Dresden: 5,90
Düsseldorf: 8,70
Erfurt: 6,20
Essen: 6,10
Frankfurt: 10,90
Gelsenkirchen: 4,90
Hamburg: 10,10
Heidelberg: 10,90
Leipzig: 5,00
Munich: 12,60
Nuremberg: 7,50
Oberhausen: 5,40
Stuttgart: 9,40

In conclusion: Don't move to Munich.

When I lived in Vauxhall Park, the bus was so consistently late I always intended to keep a record of it for the year and submit the total number of hours wasted waiting on the 8A in a single year. It would have been nuts.

I was tempted to do the same for the 4A when I lived on the Upper Newtownards Road. It wouldn't have made for good reading on Translink's part.

Goddamnit that fucking 8A bus was a nightmare. I'm glad I don't have to get buses anymore.
