I'm the same. i only recently got my arse around to picking up some Venom. Black Metal is fucking great. i also picked up Possessed but it wasn't as good. The production on the pic LP anyway is awful especially compared to the bassy overdriven madness of BM!

You got to buy CAST IN STONE...just fecking brill...

Whats the opinions on Calm Before The Storm? Havnt heard it myself tho i was just reading about it and didn't know Cronos played on it.I always thought he left after Possessed.

Mantas left before Calm. Although he was involved in some of the tracks as they had demo-ed them beforehand when it was to be called Deadline,a rough version of which is doing the rounds on ebay at the moment.

As for CBTS,well its not like the classic albums thats for sure. Cleaner sound despite the fact that the album that was released was apparently only an unmixed version that was given to the record company as a taster,so the story goes.
There are some great moments in there and I quite like it but without Mantas its missing his style.

Actually, thinking of CBTS, I think 'The Chanting Of The Priests' is one of Venom's strongest songs.

Should I be reading into the fact that no-one has mentioned Metal Black...the only album of theirs I've ever bought and didn't think a whole lot of it...is it the black sheep of the back catalogue?

Metal Black again has some excellent moments and great tracks. I wouldn't rate it even close to the first four albums though, neither is it as good as Cast in Stone or Resurrection. Its a better album than the last album mind you,the quite disappointing 'Hell'.

As for black sheep, that title probably would belong to CBTS simply because of the fairly obvious cleaner sound and perhaps more 'musical' direction when compared to what went before.

Thats not counting the Dolan -era albums of course.Thats another days argument!

My parents bought me Possessed for christmas when I was 12 and really thought it was a strong album. I still listen to it to this day.

Chanting Of The Priests was a great tune as well, but about the only good tune for CBTS. If I recall I think some of the drums were a drum machine? I mean Abaddon was a great drummer, but there was no way he polished up THAT much Laughing

But yeah, Possessed was a great record. Bad production or not, the tune Possessed ruled, as well as Fly Trap and Suffer Not The Children...

On the "Seven Dates of Hell" footage it's occasionally obvious that he was prone to what could be termed "timing issues"...

Bought the Black Metal picture disc from one of those mail order adds in kerrang, probably in about '86 or '87.
was actually quite nervous of it at first, just hadnt heard anything quite like it before (being a complete Priest and Ozzy nut at the time) but i will admit it grew on me hugely, and as my parents HATED it,it had even more appeal.Still give it a listen occasionally.great album.
