| Die hard underground fanatics and bands, metal culture; bullets, spikes, studs, patches, vests, high tops, cut n' paste fanzines, cassette taps, vinyl etc. Travelling to gigs and fests, meeting sound people and non-saps, sittin' around having conversations about metal that last well into the early hours. Finding new and old bands I've never heard before and getting a horn for ferocious metal music. |

I guess it sort of ties in with my absolute favourite thing (until I think of something else) - underground gigs & festivals. The atmosphere simply cannot be beaten and the craic is off the chart.
Very well put Barry!
Exactly. This is the difference between the mainstream and the underground. The sense of dedication people put in & the camaraderie at the small gigs and fests a lot of the time is second to none! |

Another thing - those virtually unknown NWOBHM bands who released little more than a couple of 7" singles (if even that) with some of the most killer catchy tunes of all time.
Examples include Battle Axe "Highway Rider", Crucifixion "Green Eyes", Charger "Desperadoes", Virtue "We Stand to Fight", Nighttime Flyer "Out With a Vengeance", Axis "Lady", Arc "War of The Ring", Hell "Save Us..." - the list goes on and on. Countless metal anthems played with passion, grit and absolutely no delusions. |

Aside from that, I'd go with the travelling to gigs too. Always great meeting up with mates from wherever and getting hammered. Downside is that I often miss the gig/can't remember seeing it/get emailed numerous photos of me with my cock out the following Monday.
On that note, I hope Fart doesn't come up to me at the Horslips gig slobbering all over the place and I have to explain to my Auld Lad how I know this man. Stay away from me Fart |

I love instrumental tracks. Don't think vocals are always needed, sometimes it's great to just rock out to the music. 'A Call To Arms' by Gospel Of the Horns is a great example of this. Possibly the best track on the album for me. I love moody acoustic instrumentals as well, they often can give the following tracks alot more impact. Intros are great for a dramatic build up as well, Behemoths Pandemonic Incantations and Satyricons Volcano are two particular favorites.
DIGIPACKS- fecking love them. Not as sturdy but I tend to value them more.
VINYL- Again I just seem to take more pride in ownership. |

This. I love just sitting talking shite about metal with a CD player and a 6 pack, normally with Darren Megadeth, about bands we recently discovered, old classics, good gigs, upcoming gigs etc. I also love metal culture - patches, leather, denim etc. I really need to get more paper zines.
HODII was my first small festival (I worked pretty much every friday night and saturday morning for 3 years...) and it realy gave me the desire to do it again.
With regards to music, pick scrapes ist krieg. I also love when a band has a crescendo, then stops, shouts "thrash!" or "fuck!" then shifts everything up a gear in intensity and speed. (see Asphyxion, Violator).
Barry's Pentagram tshirt.
Band related tattoos.
Songs about metal, not giving a fuck and being true to yourself are wile and deadly. |

| I love the relentlessness of some songs, when they just dont give up! Blast beats, million mile an hour riffs, singers who sound like there lungs are about to collapse! Brilliant! Examples would be.... Krisiun, Strapping Young Lad, Nile and so on... But then bands like The crown, Early Haunted, At The Gates all have those qualities as well in one way or another! Love it! |

The main love would be the total fucking darkness. No other type of music I've come across has managed to capture it.
Stuff like early Emperor, Burning Witch, Burzum, Closer.../Unholy... period Immolation, Nortt, that kinda thing. 'Unholy bends', as was mentioned in that Nile review - great description and it instantly conjours up the kind of sound I associate with the best metal (not saying Nile are anywhere near that standard - they're not - but you know what I mean).
No other genre can turn a minor key into something so relentless harrowing. |

| Oddly enough I reckon Crowbar have the unholiest bends, despite being neither evil nor unholy. |
