Alright lads, had a search but couldn't find anything specifically for practice amps.
Looking to get something to play at home. Currently using my PC but really want an actual amp for various reasons i.e. something I can bring to other peoples houses and studios for jams if needed.
Currently looking at a couple of options-
Orange Dark Terror plus some form of small cab, 2x12 or 1x12
or
Peavey Bandit 112, Vyper Tube 60 or 6505 112.
I just cant decide! Anyone with any experience with these want to step in with your two cents or any other suggestions or questions?
Cheers! |

Check out the Micro Terror aswell. 15 or 20 watts, seeing them being used a lot more at gigs recently, looks ridiculous sitting atop a 4x12 for the sizeen of it but sounds like any other Orange.
I use a MicroCube meself, only 2w but it's a handy little bugger, few batteries in it will last a good while. |

if you're jsut after an amp (any old amp,) the Roalnd Cube series can't really be beaten.
If you want something a bit more "proper," Blackheart Amplification's "Killer Ant" would be a tasty alternativee to the Tiny Terror. 1W Class-A Valve amp that can be picked up (along with a wee baby cab) for about £150. It's bigger brother, the 5W "Little Giant" is also worth a look |

| Nice one for the suggestion lads but they would be a little too small. I forgot to mention that I'm getting big into home recording would like to start experimenting with miking amps so I reckon something a little beefier would suit that? |

Just while we're on the topic (re Skakd pc) - can anyone tell me is there an interface or sound card that has a guitar input on the front that I can insert into a regular Dell tower?
Does such a thing exist? |

| Such a thing does exist, don't ask me brands though. I have a dark terror and although 15w, a practice amp it's not. It was fit to give my 120w peavey xxx a run for it's money. I'd go for Roland cube ,£80 I think one of the wee ones will set u back. Thinking of getting one myself as my pod has got dementia and not remembering presets so it's being made redundant. |

Maybe I worded my question wrong. Essentially I'm looking for an amp that isnt too big, I live in an apartment and wouldn't really see using a 120watt beast for practice at home. But, would like something I could use in a band rehearsal enviroment or gigs.
I'm not in a band right now, mainly writing and recording my own demo's at home, but would like to get back into gigging in the near future so would like somethng that suits both. Hence looking at the Dark Terror for example, switchable between 7 and 15watts and everyone seems to think it can give the big boys and good run for their money. 7watts at home, 15watts for studio or gigs.
I am leaning more twoards the Dark Terror but was hoping of anyone had any other suggestions? |

I've had that for a while, i was using a soundcard designed for gamers that came with a front bay that you could insert into your tower. ( http://www.itresource.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/creative_fitfc.jpg ) So i just used stereo jack to jack line put one end into my headphones output and the other end in the mic input of the front bay. Monitoring over crappy pc speakers is just...well...shit.
While it does work, the sound is still shit. You´d be way better off getting an external audio interface. Just leave it sitting on top of your tower and plug in whenever you want to use it. |

Ah roish, aye the Tiny Terror would be the job you're after there. Or alternatively you could pick up a decent 100/120w combo and an attenuator like the THD Hotplate. |

Yeah thats what I was thinking with the 6505 112. Its still 60 watts, which is loads so a Hotplate would be needed in the gaff. But the more I read about it the more I like the idea of the Tiny Terror. Portable, enough power for a gig but also can be worked for playing at home. |

was actually talkin to people about this yesterday, after seeing the Micro Terror. Tiny little yoke. Your man Rob Chappers or whatever his name is did a demo of it on youtube. Now he's a slightly above average size/weight man, but it actually looks like it'd fit in his back pocket.

I want something small but pretty nice and ideally cheap for my sitting room just to mess about on while the ads are on TV. Sometimes it just takes too much effort to go into the other room and plug in my "big boy amps". Would love the dark terror but it's a bit pricey for what i'd be using it for.
Hoping to hear more suggestions, but skad is obviously looking for something more powerful (so I'm gonna try hijack the thread a little bit if i may) |

those hotplates are an expensive bit of gear. i know they're practical in many circumstances but for some reason I can't wrap my head around the idea of paying for something to make my amp quieter. Something just doesn't compute. Despite the fact that I would prob use it quite a lot. Pesky brain!! |

| buy a bugera trirec infinium. bugera's clone of the Triple Rec. HOWEVER, it has a variable attenuator built in to the front of the amp - you can adjust it in 5w increments from 5 to 100. dial it down to 5-15 for playing at home, whack it up to 45 or 50 and crank fuck out of it for gigging. the end. |

| Check out VHT amps too. They look like great value. I want to downgrade myself and am trying to sell my JSX and cab, so that I have something smaller for the room. I've been looking at the Special series amps from VHT. Worth a look anyway. |

I wouldn't get one of the 6505 combos as a practise /jamming amp.
The way the volumes are structured it's hard to get it sounding decent at low volumes. They are also very heavy! The speakers they ship with are kinda crap aswell.
The older peavey bandits are great amps and dirt cheap. Got one in my place and it covers a wide tonal base and actually sounds really good. It's plenty loud enough to gig with too and sounds great at a low volume.
The orange terror line of amps are cool but the lack of proper EQ annoys me as they're always fizzy and overly bright once you get into any kind of realm of metal tone. Sure you could buy an EQ pedal and tailor it but it'd be nice to not have to do that. I think the Jim Root sig has a 3 band EQ on it now but it's pricey compared to the rest of the line.
There's alot of companies doing the small amp thing lately, tons of options there. |
