I've been offered a Squier strat for whats essentially free, so was considering arsing about with it a bit. Essentially, I want to know how difficult/expensive it would be to change it from is current pickup config (S-S-S, 5 way selector,) to my preferred setup. (H-H, 3-way selector)

I can get pickups for it for naff all, so that's that bit covered. would the rest be an expensive/difficult job?

Why would you want to convert a Strat to a 3 way selector?!! That defies all logic, man!

I could understand maybe if you wanted to put in double coils for the bridge or neck pickups but why reduce your options from 5 sounds to 3 ??? You'd probably get some quality clean tones when you split the pickups - that's mostly what strats are for! They're not just for Xmas, ya know? Wink Even if it is a Squire!

I ripped apart two strat's - I'm currently working on a third!
I get beat up ones cheap and give myself a budget of about 150 euro and do them up with all top quality parts!
It's fun to do and they always look and sound awesome!

How easy that will be really depends on the routing under the pickguard. If it has a big route that you can fit the humbuckers into then it will be a simple job of buying a new pickguard to meet your configuration and putting that on. If there isn't room for humbuckers, you'll have to make room! The rest is the same. It shouldn't be a really difficult job at all.

Not really - I just love buying beaters for half nothing and giving myself a budget to turn it into a pretty cool axe! Smile

Ah....just a special fret decal - they sit pretty flush - the strings don't rub off them or anything and once on - they don't come off too easily!

That's pretty neat!
I've a battered up Dean Vendetta that needs some serious attention and these simple but effective customisation options may be the way forward!

I'm thinking the stars up the neck, some bareknuckle warpigs and a set of Grover tuners. Might install a locking nut for the sake of solidity.Needs an entire new set of electrics in general and my friend John knows how to install LEDs onto guitars... hmmm....
