Lot of talk about banning cheap drink promos after the death of Jody Murphy, but whether it happens or not is a different matter. Clubs are big business, and used by the council to promote Belfast as a "fun and happening" place.
For those of you down south, what drink promos are on offer down there and do you think they should be regulated? |

Stupid knee-jerk reaction. A guy drinks cheap vodka, wanders off a bridge, and licensed premises and drink promos are to blame. Fuck off. What happened to personal accountability? It is already against the law to serve anyone who is obviously intoxicated anyway. This should be the focus of this particular set of unfortunate circumstances.
I'm sorry for the family that their 20 year old son is dead, but how is this anyone's fault? And how will minimum drink prices and regulating promotions do anything except serve Mr Attwood's own agenda that he has decided to crusade? Perhaps he should launch an attack on Laganside for owning an obviously lethal bridge also. Aye, right. If people want to get shit-faced, they will. Been doing it for centuries. Price alcohol out of people's reach, and welcome the upturn in the black market in booze and narcotics then. Self-righteous twat. |

| Dublin has a load of places desperately trying to pull in students with their 2 drinks/whatever. Really hate that shit as that's their main selling point. Forget decent venue/good music/shit getting robbed - cheap drink! |

Spot on Sid. The bleeding-heart, hand-wringing brigade will be out in force for this one. As you said, it's tragic that the young fella is dead, but this is no one's fault. No-one held a gun to his head and forced him to continue drinking. Its jsut typical of the blame/litigate/compensate culture that has sprung up in this society. Couldn't possibly be the fella's own fault that he got so fucking hammered, must be the bar's fault for selling the cheap booze that he merrily guzzled down. It's redolent of those idiots that sue McDonalds when they get fat.
Now, i'm not going to act high and mighty as it's well known i like a drink or ten, but if this fella was so drunk that a tragic outcome like this was possible, whey werent his mates stepping in to bundle him home/sort him out? Why did they let him get in to such a hack? Why did they let him wander off on his own?
As a bar-man who takes tremendous pride in his job, it really, REALLY infuriates me when people point the finger at clubs and cheap drink promotions as being the root of all society's evils. Yes, bar staff have a duty of care to ensure that they don't serve people who are cloearly intoxicated. I myself would never do it, and would expect not to be served if i was visibly hammered in a bar. But patrons also have a duty of care to ensure that they don't act like fucking animals and attempt to get as plastered as they possibly can. Yes, bar staff will not serve someone who is pissed. But there's only so much we can do. It's a bar, not a creche.
Introducing a minimum price for alcohol will succeed only in driving up the prevalence of the black market, as Sid said. This will lead to an increase in crime (robberies etc to acquire booze to flog) and also to counterfeit booze being flogged on the sneak, which will start making people go blind and shit. No doubt, this will then be the fault of nightclubs for selling booze at too high a price.
As to Nelson McCausland getting up on his back legs? Don't make me laugh. That bigoted fuck will take any chance to appear as teh voice of morality, no matter how ridiculous. |

The fact this bloke died on the lagan - was it not due to the fact he was standing on the railings of the bridge? Otherwise that thing would be near impossible to fall off. It is typical of the mentality here it is always someone elses fault. Whether or not the drink promotions were there or not people can get hammered before they reach the bar. Minimum pricing of drink great smart move the vast majority of the population that behave responsibly to a degree whilst drinking get penalized because of the minority that cannot behave themselves and in this case resulted in death. The pensioner that has a drink gets priced out of the market yet another kick in the teeth to the elderly. Yet alcos can get up to ฃ80 a week to support their drinking, the vast majority pays through the nose, the govt get more tax, the alcos get their free booze, the taxpayer gets hit in the pocket. It is near time that Stormont and the uk wised up, let the police do their jobs arresting and punishing the arseholes, arresting and charging the benefit fraudsters and done away with this touchy feely nanny state bullshit.
The supermarkets low prices can be undercut further with the home brew kits - that hasnt been mentioned in the press. |

I imagine it panned out something like this: Joby Murphy's obviously upset father criticises cheap drink deals. Stormont politicians, realising the scale of the pro-abstinence bible belt in NI and their personal chance for furtherance therein, jump the bandwagon of tragedy in self-publicising moral crusade to capitalise on the opportunity. A no-story, in other words. Just politicians being the usual nest-feathering, insincere sacks of shit we have come to recognise as par for the course. They couldn't actually give a toss unless either Mr Murphy personally asked them to take action, or they saw the window to score a few points/votes/better seats in heaven and get their name farther up the news.
It's like that "binge-drinking" bollocks that Westminster politicians are always going on about. Or as I call it, drinking. A large section of the populace in the UK and Ireland have always consumed alcohol like that. IT'S NOT A NEW PHENOMENON!! Hogarth, anyone?

| There are no drink promos really to speak of in the south. They were phased out along with happy hours because of lack of personal accountability. The odd place will do 2 euro drinks here and there but as far as i know its technically illegal. The cheapest you'll get is 3 a pint. Most pints are in or around the 5 mark. Its a festive joke. |

| The issue down south seems to be cheap alcohol being available in off licenses, especially spirits. A lot of young pups are hitting the heavy booze hard by buying chip spirits in offies and pretty soon a new ruling is going to come in fixing a minimum price on alcohol sales in off licenses, supermarkets etc. |

Yeah, but these are places where you go specifically to get shitfaced and the people who go there tend to enjoy that sort of music. More to the point, the only 2 drink you'll get at these places is a shot of Mikey Finns, which is atrocious shite that no one drinks anyway. |

| The dude died from Planking on the bridge - that's how he came to fall off it, as Dave says, it's impossible to fall off unless you've clambered up on the railings. |
