It's taken long enough, but I think I may be starting to warm to some elements of it. My palette is extremely limited at present, but the new Abigail Williams surprised me so much that I thought I'd give it a proper go.
So, who should I be listening to when it comes to more atmospheric Black Metal? Essential groups/albums?
Tip: Anything that sounds remotely like Alcest, Wolves In The Throne Room, or Altar Of Plagues, would be right up my street. |

Enmerkar, Drudkh and Livsnekad would be three I would have no hesitation in recommending.
Whether the latter falls into the category of atmospheric black metal I cannot be certain, more BM / Doom, but rather good all the same. |

I’d strongly recommend this demo from Kolga, it's a new band from the guy from Panopticon. Very raw and harsh production, but with some great atmosphere and some clean vocals that complement it very well. http://theflenser.bandcamp.com/album/demo
Fen would probably tickle your fancy too. |

just a quick listen into the first track of that demo and it sounds friggin' brilliant. Once you get past the production you just soak it up. |

I'm really digging the latest Wodensthrone album.
Could well be your thing, real Emperor vibe to parts of it while keeping firmly within the usual Drudkh / WITTR style for the most part. Review up shortly. |

Most Black metal is atmopsheric in a sense, but without getting anal about it I assume you're looking for the woodsy and post type stuff. In the Woods - Heart of the Ages is basically the benchmark for all that type of BM in my opinion anyway
Stuff like Ash Borer, Skagos, Petrychor, that whole scene in general will be up your street |

| Negura Bunget - Om. Not strictly speaking what you're after, but absolutely essential. |

Panopticon as well are worth checking out. Collapse is the album I'm most familiar with so maybe tuck into that one first. I think Kolga will be releasing a full-length later this year. |

Good band. Probably the only BM album I know with banjo on it. |
