Mourning Beloveth - Dust.
When I saw them live a few times, I wasn't all that bothered about them. That seemingly 5 minute wait between each strum of the guitar seemed a bit too long.
But after happening across Mountains Are Mine on youtube while compiling a list of Irish metal for some Aussie journo I was hooked instantly. The crushing power of the riffs matched with song writing smarts and excellent layering of clean and growled vocals.
It ticks every box that needs ticking by a metal release without an ounce of indulgent flab hanging of it. |

| Altar of Plages - White Tomb, not into black metal at all really but this album is something special. Particularly great coming from an Irish band |

| A really tough call to choose only one. It's good that we have that complaint as a testament to the amount of quality coming out of the country, particularly in recent times. There are a few albums that have been mentioned already that are right up there for me but I think I'll have to go with Spirit the Earth Aflame. Such a monumental album in all respects- production, song writing, performance, atmosphere- and as much as I love where the band has gone since there is a truly unique vibe to this album that makes it stand out. Add to that the fact that there wasn't a lot of metal from here to shout about at the time, and also that it was the first album to make me really open my eyes to the local scene and it will hold a special place in my heart. Killer album. |

| I'd go one further back and say "A Journey's End" - never quite sure why people rate STEA above it. Though it is more "listenable" in a way. |

| Without a doubt Stormzone - Zero to Rage. All of the tracks are genuinely awesome, this album is a stone-cold killer. But don't just listen to the ravings of this idiot, buy a copy!! You won't regret it. 4.7/5 |

| The first Predator demo. It was the first tape I bought where it really sounded like we had bands which could operate at the level of Maiden, Priest and the like. |

I'll have to go with another Primordial album, 'The Gathering Wilderness'. Picked it up on a whim along with a Cruachan album when I was about 15 or so, as a means of introducing myself to the Irish metal scene. Took me absolutely AGES to fully 'get it', but once it all clicked it was truly amazing - finally an album which summed up all of the darkest and bleakest aspects of Ireland ('The Coffin ships'), yet had a really courageous and battling undercurrent to it all. As someone who had been listening to Dimmu Borgir ( ) and Enslaved up until that point, the sheer primitiveness of it all blew me away, and led me onto more 'underground' acts as a result. They may have made better albums since, but that one was the most influential for me personally and still sounds awesome today. |

| If I had to pick one it would be Primordial's 'Dark Romanticism', like Grimes and Clancy. |
