It's often somewhat fashionable to lament the state of modern day metal and look back on the past as a time when things were much better. So I thought I'd buck the trend with a rather positive thread.

Looking (and listening) around, I have to say that DEATH metal seems to be in absolutely rude health at the moment, as good as it's been since it's mid-80s to early 90's heyday maybe. I'm talking about bands striking that elusive balance between violence/brutality, morbid darkness and songwriting ability.

I've drawn this conclusion from listening to some fanastic bands who are drawing from the well of influences created by the greats of the genre and building on what they've done. In addition to some brilliant music, this is often accompanied by real aesthetic sense and, at times, even interesting lyrics.

Some new(ish) bands that I think are carrying the banner of death metal extremely proudly: Dead Congregation, Necros Christos, Cruciamentum, Anatomia, Stench of Decay, Ignivomous, Embrace of Thorns, Krypts, Necrovation, Grave Miasma, Sanguis Imperum, Tribulation, Degial, Corpsessed, Morbus Chron, ZOM, Ensnared, Sonne Adam, Vorum... and others too.

Definitely a very good time for death metal if you ask me.

An excellent point of view Padre! Turning a negative into a positive through the means of giving exposure to bands that actually fly the flag for death metal. It works so much better than giving attention to the utter abomination of desolation that is nowadays Morbid Angel. The less said about "Illud Divinum Insanus" and the remix album that they had the brass neck to release this year the better.

Oh, and while you are at it, add Lethiferous to the list as well.

Yep, hope to hear some new stuff soon. My list is meant to be indicative no exhaustive. Lots of good stuff out there for those who look. I am currently listeneing to "Graves of the Archangels" by Dead Congregation. Still utterly hellish four years on.

Had it on today myself Padre, 'Teeth Into Red' is one of my favourite closers to an album ever I'd have to say.

There's not much else that I can add to your post other than agreement though. Having said that, there's been an awful lot of great stuff come out that I have missed, which is great for when I get a few pound under my belt again I guess! Ignivomous - Death Transmutation was one that took absolutely donkeys for me to have any appreciation for. Some great riffs on it, still kick myself for missing them in favour of chatting shite at their Dublin gig a few years back.

Yep John I know most of what you listed there and while they are deadly in their own right for me it has to be NECROS CHRISTOS, GRAVE MIASMA, CRUCIAMENTUM, SONNE ADAM, DEAD CONGREGATION who'd be my pick of the bunch from the past 5 years or so.....
...and tbh the UK was never really a hot bed for DM bar a few bands but GRAVE MIASMA and CRUCIAMENTUM are maybe for me anyway churning out some of the best ever in the whole UK death metal history....

@edit......gonna stick on "graves of the archangels" next....Killer!!!

I wouldn't really disagree with your top 5 Pat.

In my OP I actually forgot one of the bands who inspired me to post the thread in the first place: Venenum... utterly killer! Swallowed are another very worthy band I left out.

If you're including Venenenenenum, then Excoriate surely need to be in there - the main draw of HP 2010 for me. Though, as said - its indicative, not exhaustive.

I was only inluding active bands Squigzo. Excoriate were brilliant but alas no more.

Nowlistening to Stench of Decay. Not the most original band ever, but absolutely brilliant at playin old school styled Finnish death metal.

I'll have to give some of the bands mentioned here a listen. One of my major complaints of the current crop of Death Metal acts is that technicality seems to be taking precedence before feeling. I've found myself enjoying more and more Black Metal these days in comparison and honestly, when it comes to DM I tend to go for releases pre-1999 or so.

Most of the bands I listed can handle their instruments very well, but in. All cases atmosphere - i.e rank hellish morbidity - takes preference over technicality. Check 'em out.

To be honest, when done well black metal and death metal are two branches of the same tree, so I don't differentiate too much.

DC are a band I've been meaning to check out for a while now. Just based on that track, that's exactly what I've been looking for! Cheers for that.

I'll give the other bands a go now too.

If you like that DC track, check out the track "Graves of the Archangels". My DM track of the past 5 years.
