I've just revisited this album and there's a point where Dio says that they are filming it and i'd forgotten all about it.

Was there ever a video released of the gig or has any of the footage ever surfaced on a boot DVD?

The only thing released around that time was "black and blue" on vhs....sabs and blue oyster cult joint US tour...nearly sure it was the heaven and hell tour though......Dio said live evil was the end of sabs back then and described it as shit created in the studio.

There is a pro-shot Live At Rockpalast show from The Devil You Know tour as well.

Black And Blue was the H&H tour and no footage has ever surfaced of the Live Evil gig. It is believed that a collector has it in their vaults!

Similar to the guy that has the only colour footage of Cal. Jam 74 with Sabbath in full tlit mode with Ozzy. He has at least put the clips up on You Tube - but won't trade them at higher quality. I'm hoping they appear eventually as an official product, if that's what he is waiting on himself - a nice pay packet to release them.

Yeah, to this day I still can't believe they didn't release this one offcially, except for that bit on those "The History..." DVDs! Same goes for the Paris '70 show, which is at least available on some semi-official DVD here and there though... In hindsight they already blew their chance(s), when they put out the (otherwise great, mind you!) "Black Box" set and the accompanying DVD merely featured the 4 tracks from the German "Beat Club" TV show, which are -of course- fucking awesome (that version of "Black Sabbath" is still gving me the chills every fucking time!), but it could've been so much more included... Geez, the whole "California Jam" thing an a proper DVD would certainly make me jizz my pants!! As for "Live Evil", I do recall seeing a proper quality version of "Heaven And Hell" (from that particular era, complete with singing bit in the middle section) on MTV many moons ago, so there must certainly be any properly recorded footage. On the other hand, I'll probably get shit for that, but I truly detest that album, because Dio's singing on the Ozzy stuff is almost unlistenable to these ears, completely ruining the spirit and vibe of those tunes!

Didn't the BBC use to record over previously used footage in the pre-video days to conserve costs? I seem to remember hearing about TOTP and OGWT being deleted. Could this be the case here?

That's correct, i know a guy who bought a few reel to reel tapes from a guy on ebay who used to work for the BBC and they had a ton of old Top Of The Pops appearances on them from the early 70's.

I think that Cal Jam guy on You Tube bought his in a garage sale! Imagine the look on his face when he played those tapes for the first time!

Purple's set was released on DVD - so a real shame we never got the Sabbath set - but I think only 4 songs were recorded (much like the legendary Free Isle Of Wight gig in 1970 only getting three songs down on video) - so obviously costs were high to record full sets back then, which is why headliners Purple probably got the bulk of the recording perks in Cal Jam.

Paris 1970 needs a full official release - bootlegs are good, but a tidied up version would be excellent.

Don Kirshners's (forgot the spelling of that) Rock Show in 1975, again only 5 songs, but fooking awesome footage (and again the Asbury Park 1975 audio is a perfect Sabbath gig that needs a full release other than a few tracks tacked onto the re-released Past Lives CD).

Worchester 1983 should have been the bonus CD on Born Again remaster.

@Opolus - No shame in saying Dio ruined the Ozzy tunes - it's a fact he doesn't suit them, but did the best he could. Live Evil isn't a good evening for him on them, he's miles better on the Hammersmith Odean CD that came out on Rhino a few years ago.

I'm cooled off on trading now - but if anyone scoops the 19 May 2012 Birmingham O2 gig in full DVD, let me know!

And also the New Year's Eve gig - i think Phoenix 1999 as it had a cooking set that was cut to bits the gigs afterwards.

I presume that's the same one which is the bonus disc on the Mob Rules Remaster CD?

Yeah - same gig - awesome one too and now available at a steal with the Mob Rules re-issue as the Rhino CD is big money now.

Could be, there was a documentary on channel 4 a few years ago about the history of music on british tv and they were saying how in the 70s the cost of tape was huge so they started taping over loads of old stuff. There was only one guy in the department that who knew how much it could be worth to them in future and he resorted to hiding reels in his office ceiling panels!
