Yesterday I spent the day showing Negative Plane & Occultation around Dublin and for the first time in the 15 years I have lived in Dublin I finally got to visit St. Michan's church crypts and Mount Jerome cemetery in Harold's Cross. Two fascinating sites I really should have seen a long time ago! So my question is do people have any other recommendations for places to visit in and around Dublin that others may not know of? I'm always keen to visit odd places abroad but have completely neglected doing the same in my home city.
This thread can expand to include things across Ireland as well I guess. |

Glencree is cool. There's a holy well down the hill from it that is really interesting... well I find it interesting. Holy wells are fucking mad places.
Some of the other really religous statues around the Liberties are really unique aswell, plus it's the one of the few parts of dublin that has been completely untouched by social discrimination i.e. "Urban Renewal". |

| Chester Beatty Library in Dublin Castle, has a huge collection of art and historical artefacts from around the world, and they also host some great exhibitions. |

Mount Jeromes a good one alright, lived across the road from it for years and only after I moved did I find out all the interesting people buried there.
Tibradden Wood/ Hellfire club is a good days exploring and not far from the city, a trek up there is agreat way to clear a hangover too.
Cant find it on the net but heard about a walking tour around the city by some old lad thats a bit of secret history of Dublin, including info on secret underground passageways from customs house to the old Monto town, googles not showing up much for it though. |

| I visited the north down heritage centre for the first time last weekend - some interesting stuff on vikings and different invasions of the north down coast. Keep meaning to do the walk round Belfast that takes in all the old "spooky" parts of Belfast. |

There was the Zozimus tour that seemed to end a few years ago. I'm pretty sure there's still a walking 'ghost tour' but can't find any info.
The Edinburgh ones are good craic. |

| The extended Luas green line will bring you to Laughanstown (Zone Green 5). I heard that, from there, you can gain access to great pathways in and around the foothills of the Dublin mountains, as well as a chance to see one of Ireland's lesser-known portal dolmens, the Kiltiernan Dolmen, dating from around 200 BC. |

There is also remains of Tully Church, cemetary and an early christian cross round there too.
Plenty of those kind of things around the places around , hidden down back streets. In Deansgrange there is the remains of a round tower in an old cemetary behind a housing estate. In Killiney, not to far form the train station there are what is apparently the remains of the church which the area gets its name from; Cill Iníon Léinín. Again hidden down an access way behind some houses.
At Glendalough also, if you leave the general touristy area of the round tower, cemetary and lower lake and head in the direction of the upper lake there is the remains of an old miners village up there and the scenery is absolutely amazing.
My Uncle was an avid History buff and always carried a dog-eared copy of Harbison's Guide to the national monuments in the Republic of Ireland in his car. Would mark off in it all the sites he'd visited. Great jumping off point for both well known and less known areas of historical significance around the country. |

| On a warm day in town I like going up to the Dubh Linn Gardens, just next to the Chester Beatty Library. It's not too fascinating to look at, but it was actually built over the "black pool" that Dublin got its name from, hence the kinda circular shape of the place. |

Another interesting site that was posted here by someone about a year or two ago. Most of the the places featured are not all places that can visited but a really cool site none the less. www.abandonedireland.com
The abandoned mines in Wicklow look especially interesting. |
