If this should go in the Gear forum, move as appropraite please...
I may have the opportunity to exchange my '97 MIJ Jackson RR3 for an LTD MH400 circa 2005.
The MH400 is a discontinued set neck superstrat with a maple top, FR and twin EMG 81's (which i love). The Jackson has one of the nicest necks around but the pickups leave me completely cold, to the point where I play my other two Jacksons ahead of it. I like the guitar in general though.
Just wondering if the trade would be worth the taking? For what its worth the guitars have roughly the same new retail price and are in equal condition.
Any LTD heads here give me the inside spec on the MH400 as my "hands on" knowledge of LTD's is fairly limited? If it makes any difference, the last LTD superstrat I had was a KH202, which i loved.
Much appreciated lads. |

| Buy my Ibanez, it has a great neck plus it has EMGs. You don't have to compromise, Mike. You shouldn't have one or the other. I say you should have both. Buy from me, buy for life. |

| All joking aside (I wasn't joking, buy the guitar) why don't you take the pickups you like from one Jackson and put it into the Jackson you like? |

I have 3 LTDs and an ESP and ive played many more along with a few Jacksons. IMO i think that rr3 would be a bit better than the LTD 400 series. (not saying the 400 series are bad as they are great! Just the RR3 may be a bit better). To me the trade would be worth it if the LTD was a 600 series or higher as they are much better guitars.
If the only thing you dont like about the jackson is the pickups then i would say its a better use of money to get them changed to the EMGs if you like them. However if you hate the "feel" of the jackson id say go for the trade and see how you like the feel of the LTD as you may prefere it.
The only other thing is that in my experience the LTDs are made alot better than the jacksons that are out nowadays, but if that jackson is MIJ then it may be worth a bit more. |

| As I don't have any real experience with Jacksons I can't give an accurate comparison but I do know that there isn't that much of a gap between the LTD 400 series and the 1000 series. I got the MH1000 last year and it was a toss up between that and the MH401. Price difference was fairly neglibible as far as I recall. Had a slight preference for passive Pups rather than EMGs. That and cosmetically I went for the 1000 but as far as build quality goes there is fairly little between em. I LOVE my LTD and am looking to get a second one. As my current one has Seymours I'm lookin to get one with EMGs and I'd have no probs taking the 400 or the newer 401 |

Have been playing ESP's and LTD's for years man, great guitars! The 400 series guitars are solid instruments, not far off the Delux 1000 series. Basically the same guitars just no fancy binding or top woods.
Just like the 250 series years ago and the recently stopped 600 series these will be stopped soon and the demand will rise for them. Not saying they are in short supply but a couple of years after they stop producing a certain series ya always get people wanting them, and for good reason! |

cheers for all the advice lads, as it turned out it was a non-starter as the MH400 in question was a bit of a wreck. the floyd was sitting at a 30 degree angle and the neck was bowed to the point of the guitar being literally unplayable. terrible shame as it was an awesome guitar on the surface, it just would have been a bit beyond my capability to get her back to her former glory and i wasnt willing to trade with a guitar of the quality of the Jackson for a guitar i may or may not have been able to rescue.
the search continues... |
