Comply or Die were one of the most exciting, yet misunderstood bands on the Belfast live music circuit.
And now their ending has given us THVS. What do they sound like? Read on and find out.
‘Medicine Show’ is a full on head banger. The Matt Pike by way of Ron Ashton guitar is on show here, but the tone is more metallic than previous C.O.D outings. Vocally, the deranged screams match the outpouring of lyrics. So far, off to a good start.
‘Dyin on the Line’ showcases the hardcore side of the band, and is the most overt C.O.D song on here. Obviously, that’s not a huge shock considering two of their former members make up this three piece. But, as the first recorded song to showcase, it’s a bit of a weak one.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great song. I love how the vocals sound like they’re “in the red” (to use studio terminology), and I love how the guitar and bass interlock from around the 2:18 mark. But ‘Medicine Show’ would have been the better song to throw up online first.
‘Hudson’ features a similar drum into to ‘Institutionalized’ by Suicidal Tendencies, so it’s a bit of a disappointment whenever that riff doesn’t start playing. However, it is a cracking six minute epic complete with guitar noises, frenzied riffing and plenty of mosh parts.
‘Herman’, rather threateningly, starts off with a vaguely nu metal sounding riff before quickly rectifying this with a choppy riff. There’s a great moment when the guitar fades out, and all that’s left is the interplay between the rhythm section.
There’s nothing flashy or staggering about it (maybe a bit more flashiness wouldn’t go amiss). But it does show the tightness of them as musicians. And works as a lovely build up to the guitar coming back into the mix.
Musically, there’s no denying that it’s a taunt and muscular EP.
Production and mastering wise, it’s certainly a big step up from previous C.O.D outing. However, if I’m being honest, some of it feels like a more metal take on C.O.D. There isn’t a big leap forward in the song writing, which is what I was hoping for. But considering the circumstances, it’s not a big surprise. An album will be a proper test for them.
But, on the basis of this EP, I can safely pronounce this a promising and exciting listen. It’s a going out record. One that gets you in the mood to drink ten bottles of Corona, and then throw up outside Little Italy.
Consider that high praise.
