The Metal Insight Podcast #26

From Crüe, Dio, Ozzy & 'Snake - The Dead Daisies walk it like they talk it

Cock rock, Ebay guitars & bare chests!

They’re a supergroup drawn from some of the biggest names in rock ‘n’ roll – Mötley Crüe, Dio, Whitesnake and Ozzy – so we had to talk.

After all, it’s not every day you get the chance to nerd out with one of the top rock guitarists going.

In this episode, we talk to guitar hero Doug Aldrich (Dio’s right hand man!) and Marco Mendoza about being real Rock survivors – how they’re unashamed to strut their stuff, and how this incredible lineup of musicians even agreed to play together in the first place.

What the Dead Daisies do is simple. It’s big, open, good time hard rock with tunes that feel like they were written for the summer. They hark back to the bands all these guys come from – in other words, the classics.

Rock Royalty

So who are they? Well, over the years this band has been more like a collective, or perhaps a wider rock family, where people come in and go out as time goes on.

The current lineup is awesome. John Corabi (Mötley Crüe) on vox; Marco Mendoza (Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy) on bass; Brian Tichy (Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol) on drums; Doug Aldrich (Dio, Whitesnake) on guitars and David Lowy, the guy who put it all together.

Doug Tales

Chatting with Doug Aldrich was especially awesome here. I’ve seen him play a couple of times now, and been flattened by both his tone and his energy on stage.

So part of why I wanted to do this interview was to dig into his playing style a bit – to find out how he approaches bends, which he’s pretty wild at.

But also I wanted to hear about his time with Dio. And he has several pretty cool anecdotes in here. Not least the day when Ronnie caught his neighbour “enjoying himself”, shall we say, in his back yard…

Doug also tells of how he’s a bit of an Ebay addict for pickinhg up second hand guitars – I know that many of us will agree with the thrill of opening that cardboard box once the new toy has gotten through the post.

They’re Hitting Ireland

And that’s the reason we’ve done this. If you want music to just plain enjoy yourself to, bringing back the days of unashamed cock rock and hair metal, you cant miss em.

They’re hitting Dublin’s Academy Green Room on Weds Jul 20 – (tickets) – and Belfast’s Limelight on Thurs Jul 21 (tickets).

Their new album’s also out on August 5th.

And Finally

Who said cock rock died with the 90’s?!

These are guys after our own hearts.

  1. Fantastic interview, love The Dead Dasies, and especially the present line-up, seen Mendoza many times with different Bands, and also Doug, with Dio, Whitesnake, and last year with Glen Hughes, at the Limelight, Belfast, awesome gig, 18 minute version of Mistreated, Doug & Glen were really on form and enjoying themselves, of as now, the Dasies gig in Dublin is over, and what a gig it was, loved every minute of it.
