Cinnamon Girl – A Most Perfect Cover

Another autumn, and you’re dusting off October Rust for this year’s spins. Right?

Well of course.

Now, we know that Type O were already masters of the cover version from their Bloody Kisses rendition of ‘Summer Breeze’.

But what they did with ‘Cinnamon Girl’ was on a whole other level. And on that note, it pays to stop in awe for a moment at Neil Young’s original while we’re here.

Yes, Type O made it their own – adding big beats, flourishes, even playing with the lyrics, and of course that beautiful, beautiful guitar solo.

But Neil Young had in reality made it so easy for them. The reason: what a fucking riff.

Why didn’t they do the gnarly turn at the end though?

Anyway: for the season that’s in it, let’s enjoy both versions. Because that’s the beauty of music.

  1. First guitar riff I figured out by ear if I’m not mistaken. One of those magical albums that become a flag post in your life.

  2. I have been a massive Niel young fan for as long as i can remember. Typo done a savage version of CG. Probably my favourite cover.

  3. Insane version, so good. Glad to see the love for it. Enjoy the original too but would of never discovered without Type O.
Still though, I think Type O’s cover of ‘paranoid’ is the best cover version I have ever heard.

  4. Yeah it really is that time of year again. Never ceases to amaze me how many people feel the same way about it.

It really is everything about it that just screams October, the artwork, the name, and most of all the sound of it. A Beautiful album and oftentimes it’s my Favourite Album Ever. I do also get that buzz a lot off World Coming Down as well and a bit with Origin of the Feces.

But this one is the most beautiful.

  5. So good. So different from the original, yet obviously recognisable. Type O were quite simply masters of doing very unique cover versions and *almost* making their covers seem as though they were compositions of their own. You never listened to a Type O cover and came away thinking “Yawn, another lazy cover version” – they were always great. Bob mentioned the Paranoid cover. While I love it, I think their cover of Black Sabbath (the song) is THE best cover version of all time. SO goddamn good. Just oozes evil tones. Summer Breeze should get a special mention too. Ah, the list goes on…
